The Data & Analytics Internship is an outstanding program where you’ll get to learn from experienced professionals and gain hands-on-experience in the Enterprise Data & Analytics organization. There are several different teams (i.e.. Decision Science, Data Science, Gen AI, Information Management, etc..), each responsible for implementing Enterprise-wide Data & Analytics, and Gen AI solutions.

Decision Science Analyst Intern

Within defined guidelines and framework, provides decision support for business areas across the enterprise. Staff in this area will be responsible for applying mathematical and statistical techniques and/or innovative /quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make 'insight to action' recommendations to answer business objectives and motivate change. The essence of work performed by the Decision Science Analyst involves gathering, manipulating, and synthesizing data (e.g., attributes, transactions, behaviors, etc.), models and other relevant information to draw conclusions and make recommendations resulting in implementable strategies.

Data Scientist/AI Intern

Within defined guidelines and framework, translates business problems into applied statistical, machine learning, AI, simulation, and optimization solutions to inform actionable business insights and drive business value through automation, revenue generation, and expense and risk reduction. In collaboration with engineering partners, delivers solutions at scale, and enables customer-facing applications. Leverages database, cloud, and programming knowledge to build analytical solutions using statistical and machine learning techniques. Collaborates with other data scientists to improve USAA’s tooling, expanding the company’s library of internal packages and applications. Works with model risk management to validate the results and stability of models before being pushed to production at scale.

Information Management Analyst Intern

Within defined guidelines and framework, manages and analyzes information using a variety of techniques and tools, supports data management efforts with business owners and technical teams to manage and analyze information and data including master and reference data in alignment to USAA internal policies, standards, procedures, and external laws and regulations. This role will support one or more information management functions:

  • Metadata management to ensure information is understood.
  • Data Quality to ensure data is measured and trusted.
  • Retention Management to ensure data is retained and purged appropriately.
  • Data Security to ensure data is properly secured and handled based on sensitivity and regulatory requirements.

This may include working with the Information Asset Stewards and technical Owners to log data sources, support the Authoritative Data Source certification, ingest metadata and data lineage into the Enterprise Data Repository, provide data quality oversight, monitor data SLAs and data quality index, remediation times, and monitor material modifications to ensure re-certification occurs if warranted.

Business Intelligence Analyst III

Analyzes business problems and issues using data from internal and external sources to provide insight to analysts and decision makers. Identifies and interprets trends and patterns in datasets to locate influences. Creates specifications for reports and analysis based on business needs and required or available data elements. May participate in cross functional teams to address business issues. Prototypes solutions for displaying information based on business needs, leveraging Tableau and other Data Visualization techniques.

The internships will be based either at the USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, TX, or at our region offices located in Plano, TX, or Phoenix, AZ, based on business needs. Interns offered full-time roles may have the opportunity to work out of one of USAA’s satellite locations.

What you'll do:

Our Data Interns, work under direct supervision and following risk and compliance procedures and guidance, perform routine work assignments and problem resolution to support other team members, including the following tasks:

  • Leverages business, analytical and technical knowledge to understand business objectives.
  • The business problems analyzed are typically segments of a larger problem with significant impact to current and/or future business strategy.
  • Applies quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make recommendations to answer the business objective and drive the appropriate change.
  • Under direct supervision and guidance, manipulates structured and unstructured data to enable advanced analytical solutions.
  • Supports the delivery of business insights using machine learning, simulation, and optimization.
  • Partners with senior team members to develop and deploy models within the Model Development Control (MDC) and Model Risk Management (MRM) framework.
  • Support maintenance of Information Asset Inventories to ensure data and assets are cataloged appropriately.
  • Support ensuring that information is delivered in accordance with Information Governance standards and data management practices as directed.
  • Support metadata repository maintenance and proper metadata association.

What you need to have:

To qualify, you must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2024 internship will start on May 28, 2025, and last through August 8,

  • Graduation date cannot be prior to August 08, 2025
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in in quantitative analytics field such as Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Data and/or Business Analysis, Data Science, AI, or other quantitative discipline; OR 4 years of related experience in statistics, mathematics or quantitative analytics or related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Up to 2 years of experience in data/analytics, or directly related functional business experience (i.e. P&C, Bank, Finance, etc.).
  • Foundational knowledge of statistical/mathematical decision making and/or testing methodologies.
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

What sets you apart:

  • Graduation date between August 2025 and July 2026
  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical techniques and approaches used to drive fact-based decision-making.
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.
  • Experience in one or more dynamic scripted language (Python, R, etc.) and database query language (such as SQL, HQL, NoSQL, etc.) for performing statistical analyses and/or building and scoring AI/ML models.

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the hourly range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual hourly rate for this role may vary by location. The range for this position is: $23 - $34.

Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.
