Los Angeles, United States Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Full time

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the “Trojan Family,” which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university a great place to work.

As a community of Dornsife College “we are committed to the creation, preservation, and communication of fundamental knowledge in all its forms…as well as a lifelong passion for learning and a commitment to the betterment of society.”  The academic mission of Dornsife College can only be realized to its fullest potential when we build and protect a representative, equitable, inclusive culture of scholarship for students, faculty, and staff.  This is not done through initiatives but by embedding these values into the everyday interactions, relationships, policies, and practices of the College.  What is required is a seamless integration of the tenets of equity and inclusivity into every facet of academic life.  If we want our scholars, staff, and students to be able to give their very best, we must create an academic environment that portends success.

Success is possible when every member of the Dornsife community owns their role as a steward of the culture in which we learn, research, and work; when we believe that it is because of who we are that we are able to do what we do: achieve excellence, together.

Achieving a robust and inclusive academic culture requires more than just the completion of a task, but includes that person’s capacity to contribute positively to the relationships and culture of their office or department.  Therefore, any applicant seeking to advance the mission of Dornsife College should also be assessed on their capacities beyond the technical elements of their work, and demonstrate an understanding of their impact on others, and to articulate how they contribute positively to those around them.

USC Dornsife Career Pathways parallels the central mission of the University of Southern California to cultivate and develop the human mind and spirit.  Career Pathways works to align students’ academic interests with individual career and professional pathways through exploration and engagement in curricular and co-curricular opportunities.  The Career Services Advisor advises students and alumni on career pathing, job search methods, employment readiness, internships and other career-related matters, collects relevant online materials and hands-on resources for client use, remains current on labor market trends and competitive environments and performs duties and responsibilities as assigned to contribute to the overall success of USC Dornsife Career Pathways.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides career counseling services to students and alumni, either remotely or in person
  • Utilizes various forms of assessment tools (e.g., web, software) and provides feedback to clients based on results and practical knowledge
  • Assists with identification and evaluation of career path options
  • Gathers informational resources to facilitate career, internship, and job search
  • Administers various interview and assessment strategies to assist students/alumni with resume development, interviewing skills, job searches, and employment readiness
  • Responsible for any required documentation, utilizing client tracking/case management software
  • Liaises between employer organizations and students, encouraging and facilitating recruitment for employment and/or internships
  • Stays current with labor-market and recruiting trends, developments in varied industries, and maintains an active network of professional contacts
  • Provides assistance to senior advisors and/or management with administrative functions (e.g., project activities coordination, data collection)
  • Attends departmental meetings and conferences, representing career services
  • Supports Dornsife and campus partners by providing career workshops or presentations upon request
  • Assists with development, coordination, and execution of professional development opportunities (e.g., job fairs, career workshops, lectures)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts/Sciences degree required.  Master's degree in related field preferred
  • 1 year minimum experience, 2 years preferred, in career counseling, career advising, counseling, educational counseling, counseling psychology, post-secondary student advising, higher education, human resources, or related field
  • Knowledge of career services, career development, student development, and internship/job search strategies
  • Current on career trends, technologies, research, and potential impact on the hiring of college graduates
  • Familiarity with career resources, software, and databases like Handshake, ONET online, or LinkedIn
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Google Workspace, Zoom, and Canva
  • Workshop or Program planning, implementation, and management
  • Effective written, presentation, communicative, and interpersonal skills
  • Sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
  • Strong team player willing and able to collaborate with colleagues across the campus and local community
  • Ability to work well independently and multi-task

Note: This position may include participation in limited evening events and programs.

Hourly range: The hourly rate range for this position is $29.46 - $33.15. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
