School Counselor

Definition
An employee in this class will utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Uses appropriate assessment and diagnostic procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of consulting processes and techniques with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Assists parents and teachers in understanding and responding to developmental levels of students.
  • Presents instructional/informational program to groups of students, parents, and teachers.
  • Shares appropriate information about students to school and community agencies.
  • Assists with coordination of student services in the school.
  • Interprets testing results and other student data accurately.
  • Follows the laws, policies, and procedures which govern school programs.
  • Adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession.
  • Takes part in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Plans activities for the different grade levels.
  • Serves as the Liaison between Cleveland Community College and Pinnacle Classical Academy.
  • Assists Dean and Academic Dean with Course Catalog and course registration.
  • Transcript audits for High School Students.
  • Disseminates information to students and parents regarding colleges, career paths, internships, scholarship opportunities, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of educational laws, policies, rules, practices, and School Policy.
  • Thorough knowledge of counseling ethics, procedures, and practices.
  • General knowledge of the traits and characteristics of the varied student age and ability groups.
  • Ability to understand, be sensitive, and work with each student on an appropriate level and with correct techniques and methods.
  • Ability to analyze situations, determine possible options, and make appropriate decisions based on the facts and the specific situation.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in approaching and working with sensitive and difficult situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, students, teachers, staff, administrators, agency personnel and others.
  • Ability to develop and compile records and reports.
  • Ability to plan and organize multiple activities, projects, and other tasks and monitor each appropriately.
  • Understands the growth and development of school's students.

  • Implement a comprehensive information literacy curriculum
  • Promote a lifelong love of reading and a robust reading culture through regularly scheduled book clubs, book talks, displays, etc.
  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers and skillful researchers
  • Oversee the maintenance of the library's collection (print and online), including circulation, collection development, inventory, and evaluation

  • Collect and analyze data to improve instruction and to demonstrate correlations between the library and student achievement
  • Remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs
  • Works with teachers and other educators to build and strengthen connections between student information and research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources.
  • Participate in the curriculum development process to ensure that the curricula include the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and technological literacy) necessary to meet content standards and to develop lifelong learners
  • Collaborate with teachers and students to design and teach engaging inquiry and learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking
  • Participate in the implementation of collaboratively planned learning experiences by providing group and individual instruction, assessing student progress, and evaluating activities
