Job Profile Summary
This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Clinical Nurse duties: Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the care needs of a designated group of patients or provides nursing care and identified clinical support tasks within the scope of practice for achievement of the patient's plan of care as directed. Provides professional nursing care to patients. Requires a nursing license. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. A specialist level role that is a recognized subject matter expert in job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience. Typically manages large projects or processes with limited oversight from manager, coaches, reviews and delegates work to lower level professionals, resolving difficult and often complex problems.
Job Overview
This promotes excellence and innovation in nursing care, contributes to the growth and development of nursing staff through developing / implementing education activities and facilitating the application of nursing theory into clinical practice. Acts as educator to improve and enhance functional capabilities of licensed and non-licensed personnel and volunteers by the provision of orientation, continuing education and in-service programs. Works with the medical and nursing staff and other hospital departments in a collegial and collaborative relationship to ensure safe care to patients through compliance with unit policies, procedures and protocols. Counsels and coaches nurses when problems arise in nursing clinical practice.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
2. Registered Nurse (RN) license.
3. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
4. Two (2) years of nursing experience and expertise as required by department.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Nursing.
2. Nursing Professional Development Educator Certification.
3. Three (3) years of relevant nursing experience and expertise as required by department.
4. Clinical teaching experience.
5. Prior supervisory experience.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Works cooperatively with all department managers and administration to develop, implement, document, and deliver educational content to staff.
2. Provides formal and informal clinical consultation to nursing staff on education and practice issues to achieve competency and compliance in clinical practice.
3. Collaborates with clinical leadership to respond to education and training requests in a timely manner.
4. Evaluates educational offerings and activities in order to revise and improve programs.
5. Identifies educational programs that contribute to the growth and development of nursing personnel from novice to expert based upon identified needs. Develops and/or acquires learning resource materials for nursing staff.
6. Develops, implements, and evaluates orientation programs for professional nurses and non-professional nursing personnel including assessment and skill validation. Participates in the evaluation of orientee' s performance and recommends actions for improvement by identifying strengths and weaknesses.
7. Works closely with nursing administration and education colleagues to ensure a smooth orientation process and to build a flexible workforce.
8. Report any non-adherence, poor performance, identified risk to the individual staff member and relevant clinical leader.
9. Coordinates and implements educational activities to validate competency of nursing department members on hospital wide and unit specific skills.
10. Assures that goals, standards, and regulatory requirements, and other standards are reflected in orientation, skill validation, in-service training and continuing education programs.
11. Facilitates and conducts the educational activities that incorporate new products, policies and procedures into the hospitals. Utilizes a variety of instructional methodologies that incorporate the theories of adult learning.
12. Designs cost effective methods of training for assuring competency of nursing staff in relation to new technology, products, policy and procedures and regulations.
13. Teaches in the classroom, in simulated clinical settings and in the patient care area.
14. Makes rounds on clinical units as appropriate to evaluate patient care of new graduate nursing staff.
15. Participates in system wide and unit-based committees, councils and task forces as designated.
16. Initiates and maintains effective inter-professional collaborative relationships.
17. Communicates and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to promote patient care goals, deliver quality care and achieve patient satisfaction.
18. Promotes open communication and ensures confidentiality.
Physical Requirements:
1. Regular sitting, occasional standing & walking, and lifting of 5-10 lbs.
2. Frequent movement about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
3. Constantly operates a computer and other standard office equipment such as copy machine, phones, photocopier, fax machines and computer printers.
4. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate computer keyboard and equipment.
5. Requires ability to see computer screen and reports.
6. Frequent exchange accurate information via phone, email and/or in person.
Skills & Abilities:
1. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Outlook, Word, Power Point, and Excel.
2. Able to communicate appropriately to all levels of staff, nursing leadership and executive leadership.
3. Self-directed, creative, initiative to develop educational programs.
4. Ability to read/write and communicate in English.
5. Ability to communicate appropriately to all levels of staff, clinical leadership and executive leadership.
6. Ability to function well in very busy situations.
7. Responsible and reliable.
8. High level organizational, time management, problem solving and priority setting skills.
9. Ability to organize responsibilities, make decisions, advocate for new orientees' learning needs, set limits, and demonstrate critical thinking.
10. Ability to incorporate and apply the principles of adult learning into educational and training sessions.
