A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) is seeking a full-time Senior Director of Community-Based Education on the Mesa, Arizona campus. The Senior Director of Community-Based Education will be responsible for integrating community-based clinical experiences, service learning initiatives, and interprofessional education (IPE) into the curriculum, providing students with comprehensive, real-world experiences that promote clinical competence, collaboration, and social responsibility. The senior director will work across departments and disciplines to ensure students are prepared to deliver team-based, patient-centered care, particularly in underserved communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategy: Develop and lead the strategic vision for community-based education, service learning, and interprofessional education in alignment with the dental school's goals and accreditation standards.
  • Program Development:
    • Oversee the design, implementation, and coordination of community-based education programs that provide dental students with hands-on clinical experience in underserved or diverse communities.
    • Develop and manage service learning initiatives that integrate community engagement and healthcare delivery, emphasizing the importance of social accountability and public health.
    • Lead the development of interprofessional education programs, facilitating collaboration between dental students and other health professionals (e.g., medical, physician assistant, social work) in classroom, simulation, and clinical settings.
  • Curriculum Integration: Collaborate with assistant/associate deans and clinic directors to ensure community-based education, service learning, and IPE are effectively integrated into the curriculum and support competency-based education.
  • Community Partnerships: Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations, clinics, public health agencies, and other educational institutions to create experiential learning opportunities.
  • Student Engagement & Development: Mentor and guide students through community-based rotations, service learning projects, and IPE activities, focusing on developing cultural competence, collaboration skills, and social responsibility.
  • Faculty Development: Provide leadership and training for faculty involved in community-based, service learning, and interprofessional programs, supporting their development in these areas.
  • Program Evaluation & Assessment: Design and oversee the assessment of community-based education, service learning, and IPE initiatives, collecting data to evaluate student outcomes, program effectiveness, and community impact.
  • Public Health Advocacy: Advocate for the role of dental education in addressing healthcare disparities, improving oral health access, and promoting community engagement.
  • Grant Writing & Funding: Pursue external funding through grants and partnerships to support and expand community-based, service learning, and IPE initiatives.
  • Accreditation & Compliance: Ensure that all programs meet accreditation standards, including those set by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and other relevant bodies.
Qualifications:
  • Education: DDS, DMD, or equivalent terminal degree in dentistry or a related healthcare field. An advanced degree in public health, education, or a related field (e.g., MPH, EdD, PhD) is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in dental or healthcare education, with demonstrated leadership in community-based clinical education, service learning, or interprofessional education.
    • Proven experience in curriculum development and program management within academic settings.
    • Experience working with underserved communities and fostering interprofessional collaboration.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with faculty, students, and external partners.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and departments to promote interprofessional learning and community engagement.
    • Competency in program evaluation and data-driven decision-making.
    • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in securing grants or external funding for educational or community-based initiatives.
  • A record of scholarly work in interprofessional education, service learning, or community-based care.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards related to community-based education, IPE, and service learning in dental or health professions education
