JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for staff development, in collaboration with the members of the Leadership Team and under the direction of the Manager of Education, to facilitate the delivery of quality patient care and the improvement of nursing practice at Memorial Healthcare.

This goal is achieved by participation in educational programming, patient and family education pursuits, nursing orientation/competency, and other programs as needed. Involved in interdisciplinary projects as representation of nursing may assist in the operational aspects of education as assigned.

Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product or service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience. Recognizes and demonstrates understanding of patient and family centered care.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Organizes and manages nursing orientation/competency program ensuring completion as planned at intervals sufficient to meet the needs of the institution.
  2. Assists in conducting house-wide education programs, competency validations, etc.
  3. Updates orientation/competency material as required, reviews and adjusts schedule as needed, communicates with directors, managers, orientees, faculty, staffing office, and Human Resources as necessary.
  4. Together, with other members of nursing leadership, continuously improves the orientation/ competency program to ensure it meets the needs of the department and orientees in regard to rapidly changing practice requirements.
  5. Provides annual performance appraisals of unit staff; conducts first level employee coaching/counseling as directed by the manager.
  6. Participates in recruitment and retention activities.
  7. Participates in the review and development of nursing policy/procedure/protocols
  8. Participates in patient and employee safety committees and initiatives.
  9. Assists in program development and delivery as needed.
  10. Utilizes E-learning solutions for providing and/or recording educational programs. Provides guidance in content development as requested.
  11. Recognizes demands of responsible resource allocation and utilization and ensures that pro-grams are managed efficiently.
  12. Sets priorities for accomplishing department and hospital goals.
  13. Engages in educational experience and programs that ensure ongoing competence and knowledge in own practice.
  14. Displays a philosophy of and works for the professional development of others.
  15. Sets goals and objectives for self-development.
  16. Maintains competency in clinical care of patients.
  17. Utilizes computer information systems according to standards of practice.
  18. Represents nursing practice in interdisciplinary projects.
  19. Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
DEPARTMENTAL AND ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Demonstrates job related aspects of patient safety to assure a safe environment, safe and effective use of equipment and technology, and decreased risk of potential adverse patient occurrences.
  2. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's and division's policies and procedures.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  4. Performs all other job-related duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred or obtain within 5 years.
  2. Current unencumbered license as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
  3. Current certification in Basic Life Support required.
EXPERIENCE
  1. Five years of clinical or health education related experience, preferred.
  2. Experience with the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of continuing education activities, preferred.
  3. Three or more years of medical surgical, intensive care or specialty nursing experience in acute care, preferred.
  4. Instructional teaching experience, both formal and informal is preferred.
  5. Prefer experience as nursing faculty in a nursing program
  6. Experience and knowledge of the varied practice environments that utilize nurses is preferred.
  7. BLS instructor preferred.
  8. ACLS instructor preferred.
  9. BLS Provider status preferred or obtain within 1 month.
  10. ACLS Provider status preferred or obtain within 6 months.
  11. Effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  12. Good interpersonal skills and effective customer service skills.
  13. Remains current in nursing and teaching skills.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES/MOTOR SKILLS

Ability to:

1. Travel independently throughout the service area.

2. Withstand extended periods of walking, standing, and sitting.

  1. Have hand-eye coordination to operate equipment.
