The Infusion Staff Nurse works within a division of Transplant Surgery & Transplant Nephrology under the general oversight of the Nurse Manager, the Abdominal Transplant Surgical Chief, and the Sr. Administrative Director. As a member of the division's Infusion Unit, the Infusion Nurse works closely with the team to support adult transplant patients for treatment and prevention of organ rejection, the treatment of post-transplant infections, neutropenia, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance, as well as assisting with post-transplant lab collection from AV Fistula/Grafts, ports/PICC lines. This position is in the outpatient transplant infusion center that services all organ transplant patients.

Patients are followed throughout the entire trajectory of their post-transplant care including treatment, rehabilitation, long-term follow-up. The Infusion nurse will provide competent, compassionate, individualized, nursing care for patients in collaboration with the team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Communicates clinical information and education with patients and family members. Ensure that care is safe, efficient, effective, timely and meets the cultural, spiritual, and ethnic needs of each patient and family. Implements infusion protocols in a safe manner to include review of patient history, treatment plan, agent, and dosage to be administered and patient monitoring. Document patient care in the patient and other electronic and recordkeeping systems. Maintains clinical skills specific to provision of infusion and for transplant patient care. May work with the Transplant Center's Research Manager, assisting as needed, with the administration of study drugs. Participates in establishing standards of care, quality improvement projects, supporting the overall patient experience.

The position requires a strong commitment to exceptional nursing service and patient care, as well as the ability to work autonomously, and with confidence in their own ability to manage treatments and patient through-put. The staff nurse must possess strong communication skills to effectively work with, and educate, critically ill patients and their families; commitment to advance nursing practice, patient experience, and infusion operations is essential.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides competent, compassionate patient- and family-centered nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of the nursing process and interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Provides care appropriate to adult transplant patients and is understanding of their needs.
  • Prepares for and conducts patient visits in an effective and timely manner. Reviews patient medical histories, care plans, visit and treatment requirements and addresses any visit needs.
  • Performs infusion treatments according to protocols. Properly handles and administers all drugs and therapeutic agents. Properly uses, monitors, and cleans all equipment.
  • Performs lab collection, IV insertion and removal according to protocol from AVF/AVG, Ports and PICC lines.
  • Provides and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families that is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive and that fosters a successful visit. Facilitates patient flow through infusion service and clinic.
  • Articulates and carries out the professional nursing and infusion role during engagement with the patient, family, and other team members.
  • Identifies, plans, and implements nursing interventions in support of quality infusion treatment as well as the care continuum. Facilitates and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients, adjusting practice and services as needed.
  • Coordinates involvement of the patient, family, and health team members in patient care, including patient/family education and teaching.
  • Documents relevant patient data/information. Utilizes electronic systems, e.g., Epic, to record and update patient details.
  • Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information to/from other health care team members. Promotes continuity of care through effective hand-offs.
  • Utilizes clinical and nursing resources efficiently to facilitate optimal patient care. Maintains effective relationships with Medical Assistants and other clinic staff to ensure collaborative service to our patients.
  • Complies with professional, regulatory, and quality and safety requirements.
  • Collaborates with other professionals and support staff in maintaining recognized standards. Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participates in daily operational activities necessary for safe patient/staff environment, such as to ensure workspace is neat, clean and supports patient flow and to ensure necessary supplies are ordered and available. Participates in team activities such as morning huddles.
  • Participates in, and contributes to, performance improvement activities. Helps define standards of excellence for patient care; participates in improvement of patient care services in a cost-effective way.
  • Contributes to the effective administration of clinic services and operations.
  • Provides input to the Nurse Manager regarding Infusion needs.
  • Participates in orientation of new permanent and temporary staff members, including research staff.
  • Participates in division and departmental committees for formulation of nursing and operational policies and procedures.
  • Works with the Research Manager and scientific staff to learn and support clinical trials, including by administering study drugs.
  • Monitors and engages in own professional development activities.
  • Updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing education practices.
  • Identifies specific learning needs and goals and develops a plan to meet them. Collaborates with leadership to implement appropriate learning experiences and other avenues to enhance professional development.
  • Adheres to Department of Surgery and Division Transplant Surgery requirements for required training.
  • Performs other responsibilities and projects as required. Contributes to relevant committees, professional meetings, continuing educational and/or formal academic programs.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program required; BSN preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of RN experience required.
  • Current Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse is required.
  • Understanding and skill in direct patient care in a hospital or clinic setting with the ability to work with adult, critically ill patients. Ability to advance knowledge and skill related to outpatient care and transplant patients.
  • Knowledge of and ability to administer medications and/or chemical agents as well as ability to intervene in any contraindication or reaction.
  • Builds and maintains appropriate working relationships with physician, nursing, administrative and other staff.
  • Able to effectively communicate including clinical information in lay terms to inform and educate patients and their families regarding treatments and procedures.


Able to work safely, use personal protective equipment, follow protocols, address unexpected clinical and operational needs, and comply with nursing practice requirements. Manual dexterity to insert and remove IVs and PICC lines. Able to physically operate and monitor equipment.

Ensures proper hygiene, hand washing and other efforts to support a clean or sterile work area.

Able to work independently, making effective clinical decisions, as well as the ability to work as part of a healthcare team. Exhibits confidence in skillset and respect for cooperative clinical process.

Organizational skills with the ability to self-manage and coordinate the timeliness of treatments and patient throughput.

Engages effectively in the clinic's operational improvement initiatives and works to ensure an environment that is safe as well as providing care that is evidence based and patient centered, timely and efficient while being inclusive and equitable.

Flexible, compassionate, and understanding in workstyle to foster a supportive patient and family experience. Able to handle a busy office setting with changes in priorities and timelines.

Computer skills to perform data entry of patient information in electronic recordkeeping systems, such as Epic
