Position Title: Elementary School Counselor and Field Expert
Location: Harwood Elementary
Department: Curriculum & Instruction
Reports To: Building-level Principal
Term: 188-day renewing contract beginning with the 2024-2025 academic year. Position is a 0.5 FTE School Counselor and a 0.5 FTE, grant-funded through 2027, Field Expert.
Schedule: M-F Full-time following the academic hours of operation
Salary: Position follows the Teacher Salary Schedule 2023-2025

SUMMARY: The School Counselor and Field Expert will be responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program that focuses on learner outcomes, teaching learner competencies, and providing services to learners, parents, school staff, and the community. This will include bi-weekly classroom lessons, individual and small group social skill lessons, providing classroom teacher support, and supporting the MTSS team to meet learners social and emotional needs. The School Counselor will be responsible for learners in grades K-5 and work collaboratively with administration. This position will serve as an expert in the field by providing direct, on-site modeling, training, and coaching for other School Counselors throughout the district. This is done in collaboration for the elementary counselor team in partnership with mentors, building administrators, and district leadership.

  • Utilizes district behavioral plans as a backbone to promote positive learner behavior.

  • Utilizes the district protocol for maintaining information on learner progress.
  • Utilizes knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and learners.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the learners.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to learners.

Education and/or Experience:
  • North Dakota Teaching License with appropriate School Counselor credential.
  • Master's Degree in School Counseling.
  • Minimum three years' experience as a school counselor in an elementary setting is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and experience mentoring / training elementary counselors.
  • Prior experience working with complex learner behaviors is preferred.
Language Skills:
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions and short correspondences in the English language.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, expressively, and reactively.

Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Exercise confidentiality, discretion, and good judgement.
  • Adhere to the assigned work schedule by maintaining regular and punctual attendance.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and continual access to reliable transportation.
