Research Lab Manager

The Translational Neuroscience Laboratory (TNL; PI: Sabina Berretta) at McLean Hospital seeks a scientifically minded individual with excellent organization skills and attention to detail to join as a Research Lab Manager. The TNL focuses on the pathophysiology of psychiatric symptoms, including their molecular and cellular underpinnings. Her lab utilizes protein and gene expression detection assays on human postmortem brain tissue to test the overarching hypothesis that neural circuits and molecular pathways involved in emotion regulation are disrupted transdiagnostically in persons suffering from disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and PTSD, as well as neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington and Alzheimer disease.

The Lab Manager will, under general supervision, contribute to research projects in the TNL. They will carry out independent projects and assist with all other projects in the lab. Applicants should have a strong interest in preclinical as well as translational neuroscience. They will be responsible for the conduction of human postmortem studies and in vitro studies using a variety of assays assessing gene and protein expression at cell level resolution in combination with electronic record analyses. The Lab Manager will be responsible for supporting work on other projects in our group, including research staff recruiting, safety and compliances regulations and supplies and equipment management.

Works under the very general direction of the principal investigator or department administrator

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversight of all personnel management
  • Responsible for the transmission of and compliance with hospital regulatory requirements
  • Coordinates the utilization of lab resources with other labs
  • Trains lab staff in routine and specialized lab techniques
  • Carries out independent research projects which involve the execution of highly sophisticated techniques
  • Responsible for oversight of all lab supply and equipment, purchasing and maintenance
  • Contributes to scientific literature and may present results
Qualifications

SKILLS:
  • Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations
  • Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent execution of research projects
  • Must have an aptitude for technical problem solving
  • Ability to effectively supervise others
  • Excellent organizational skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research
  • Must possess aptitude for budget management
  • Must have working expertise in research assays including RNAscope, Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, digital microscopy and cell cultures.
  • Must have in depth human neuroanatomy knowledge
EDUCATION:
  • BS (required)
  • MS (preferred)
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of 2 years of research experience
  • Prior supervisory experience required
