Job Summary: The Respiratory Therapist I is responsible for interacting with medical and nursing staff and provide professional respiratory care services that will optimize respiratory therapeutic outcomes.
Essential Duties/Tasks:
  • Assesses the respiratory care needs of patient and provides suggestions to improve delivery of such services.
  • Initiates and follows through with protocols described in the policy and procedure manual and as approved by the department and medical staff.
  • Identifies and communicates the contraindications and possible complication of patients receiving respiratory care.
  • Administers respiratory therapy as indicated by physician order or protocol and accurately documents delivery of such therapies.
  • Charts treatments and procedures into the hospital computer system accurately and completely.
  • Draws, analyzes, and ensures physiological validity of results and accurately reports arterial blood gases.
  • Provides invasive and non-invasive ventilator support.
  • Provides instruction to patients, family, staff, and students about theory, therapy, and equipment used in Respiratory Care procedures and techniques, and documents as required.
  • Demonstrates advocacy in adopting JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals into daily practice.
  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgement within scope of practice.
  • Participates in annual clinical competency education.
  • Seek to improve performance by participating in self-development activities, in-services and continuing education that is appropriate for the effective and efficient delivery of Respiratory Care.
  • Accountable for the identification and reduction of unsafe practices that could cause harm to patients.
  • Other duties as assigned.
