Job Goal:

As a school-based SLPA, the SLPA will work under the direction of a speech-language pathologist to offer speech services to students who require intervention by providing prescribed therapies according to the parameters outlined in students' individual education plans (IEP). In this position, the primary goal is to help students overcome speech limitations in order to be successful in the classroom and develop essential communication skills.

Position Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology from a recognized university or complete a speech-language pathology assistant training program culminating in an associate degree.
  • At least 100 hours of fieldwork experience carrying out speech-language pathology assistant responsibilities.
  • Prior SLPA experience working in a school setting is preferred but not required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide drill and practice in accordance with a plan designed by the supervising speech-language pathologist(s).
  • Record correct/incorrect productions.
  • Complete informal progress notes for sessions.
  • Review progress notes with supervising speech-language pathologist(s).
  • Transfer progress notes onto Medicaid documentation forms.
  • Assist with conference paperwork and filing.
  • Maintain therapy room and supplies.
  • Prepare therapy materials as directed by the supervising speech-language pathologist(s).
  • Assist the supervising speech-language pathologist(s) with large groups such as integrated therapy and inclusion classes.
  • Update computer information on students receiving speech-language therapy.
  • Escort students to and from speech-language therapy sessions.
  • Make phone calls to schedule screenings and conferences.
  • Convert raw test scores [provided by the supervising speech-language pathologist(s)] to standard scores and percentiles.
  • Transfer information provided by the supervising speech-language pathologist(s) onto a rough draft of the evaluation report.
  • Update computer information on students receiving speech-language therapy.
  • Participate in necessary trainings when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
