About the Team:

The Advanced Systems Development (ASD) Group within the STR Sensors Division executes a broad portfolio to advance sensing capabilities in contested domains including undersea and overhead. We develop novel sensing hardware and processing that spans acoustic, HF, and optical domains from multiple platforms including AUVs and cubesats. The common goal of these efforts is to field prototype hardware to demonstrate impactful applications.

The Role:

STR is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support Department of Defense (DoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) programs for the design, fabrication, integration, and testing of sensor components, subsystems, and systems. Your role will involve collaboration with fellow researchers and engineers on multi-disciplinary teams within STR to contribute to the development, building, testing, and prototyping of sensing capabilities.

What you will do:
  • Design, simulate, and fabricate mechanical structures in support of new sensor technologies and implementations related to transduction, orientation, and deployment.
  • Perform engineering trade studies and analyses to optimize mechanical designs in relation to interoperability, performance, and survivability.
  • Demonstrate technical leadership within small, multi-disciplinary teams that may span hardware, software, and test & evaluation.
  • Clearly communicate with colleagues, customers, stakeholders, and prime- and sub-contractors.
Who you are:
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by the U.S. Government
  • MS or BS degree with background in Mechanical Engineering or related fields
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in design, fabrication, integration, and/or testing of mechanical solutions (3+ years for MS, 5+ years for BS)
  • Familiarity and proficiency with computer-aided CAD/CAM design tools such as COMSOL, ANSYS, SolidWorks
Even Better:
  • Ability to marshal a solution through requirements development, design, fabrication, and integration.
  • Experience with materials and designs to survive harsh conditions including overpressure and/or vacuum.
  • Experience in thermal modeling, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, or other multi-physics modeling and simulation.
  • Experience in acceptance testing, including both experiment design, data collection, and interpretation of definitive data.
  • Ability to interact with technical and non-technical customers and external teammates to understand their technical issues and frame potential solutions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in engineering and non-engineering venues.
