New York, United States NDWA Full time
Job Title: New Jersey Basebuilding Organizer
Position: Full time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Director of Local Care Worker Organizing
Salary: $71,070 to $73,218 DOE
Work location: New Jersey

Position Summary:
The National Domestic Workers Alliance (www.domesticworkers.org) is the leading voice for the country's 2.5 million nannies, care workers, and house cleaners, and organizes domestic workers across the United States for respect, recognition, and labor standards. We work to guarantee labor protections for domestic workers by winning legislation at the local, state, and national levels and elevating domestic workers as key leaders in building a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance formed in 2007 and currently represents 70 affiliate organizations and local chapters in 36 states and 17 cities.

The National Domestic Workers Alliance has been organizing domestic workers in New Jersey for ten years through affiliate organizations and, since 2021, has been building a base of direct care workers as NDWA members. In January, 2024, the New Jersey Domestic Worker Coalition won passage of the NJ Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The coalition is now focused on ensuring a successful implementation of the bill of rights, educating domestic workers and employers across the state about the new rights, and advocating with state enforcement agencies to ensure domestic workers can effectively exercise their rights.

The NJ Basebuilding Organizer will focus on growing NDWA's base of agency-employed and other publicly-funded home care workers in NJ, and creating opportunities for these workers to participate in campaigns led by the NJ Domestic Worker Coalition and partners focused on raising standards for direct care workers in New Jersey. They will be supervised by the Director of Local Care Worker Organizing, and will work very closely with the New Jersey Lead Organizer and the six NDWA affiliate organizations that are part of the NJ Domestic Worker Coalition.

Primary responsibilities:
  • Implement an outreach plan to reach agency-employed and publicly funded home care workers in key counties in New Jersey by utilizing both online and offline tools.
    • At least 60% of the Organizer's time will be spent in the field, conducting outreach, identifying home care workers, and cultivating relationships to generate new contacts and members.
  • Regularly input new contacts, field interactions, and track member participation into the NDWA database.
  • Conduct regular follow-up communication with new home care worker contacts.
  • Train and develop worker leaders who can facilitate membership meetings, lead trainings and other programming, and conduct outreach activities.
  • Identify and provide support for new worker leaders to participate in campaign activities related to the implementation of the NJ Domestic Worker Bill of Rights and any future campaigns focused on publicly funded homecare workers.
  • Identify and cultivate partnerships with ally organizations in NJ focused on homecare issues.
  • Mobilize New Jersey NDWA members for campaign activities related to the National Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, other home care related campaigns, other national campaigns, and national programs like Assemblies.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years experience in grassroots community organizing, either paid or volunteer, with an emphasis on labor organizing, racial justice, immigrant rights, and/or base building
  • Highly motivated individual with a passion for engaging multiracial, low wage communities and developing the leadership of domestic workers
  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage, and inspire community members
  • Ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Proficient in English and Spanish
  • Must have a valid drivers license and access to a vehicle (driving to in person outreach and meeting locations is required)
  • Experience with meeting facilitation and popular education training
  • Basic computer skills: (i.e. Google Suite, Excel, PowerPoint, database programs)
  • Ability to work some evening and/or weekend hours as part of their regular schedule
  • Excellent time & project management skills
  • Knowledge of issues affecting women of color, Black, and/or undocumented domestic workers
Preferred but not required:
