Description of Duties:

This 11-month, SHRA position is a full-time, live-in position reporting to the Dean of Students or designee.

The RLA Coordinator is responsible for the selection, training and advising of the Residential Life Assistant program. The Coordinator works with all members of the CC team to develop selection guidelines, create the application process, train, and offer ongoing support and supervision to the selected RLAs.

The specific duties of the RLA Coordinator include:
  • Coordinate application process using the Senior Leadership Campus Service process, supplementary documents, and additional process requirements

    • Hold interest or Q&A meetings for juniors

    • Update application as needed based on feedback from Community Coordinators and existing RLAs

    • Schedule and supervise all aspects of the interview process - application review, group process, interviews, and other evaluation tools

    • Communicate selection to candidates

    • Hold RLA draft for community coordinators, identify both selected candidates and alternates

    • Maintain spreadsheet of individual and group scores for evaluations, interviews and application readings

  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate training for RLAs and Community Coordinators

    • Offer training in at least three specific timeframes: spring for rising seniors, during RLA Orientation Week, and on-going on a monthly basis during their senior year

    • Write, edit, and maintain the RLA Handbook and clearly communicate expectations to RLAs and Community Coordinators

    • Provide support to individual RLAs throughout the year - through monthly RLA meetings; individual scheduled meetings; and in response to academic, conduct, or emotional issues that arise

    • Provide training opportunities for RLAs and inform Community Coordinators about these opportunities. Some of these sessions will be required for RLAs and CCs to participate together to foster team building.

  • Offer on-going support and supervision of RLA student teams

    • address discipline issues that RLAs experience throughout the year

    • coordinate any conduct consequences for RLAs

    • address all performance issues

    • offer additional support to RLAs experiencing emotional, medical, or academic issues

Community Coordinators are provided with an unfurnished apartment. In addition, utilities (electric, water, and local phone), internet access, and access to fitness facilities are complimentary along with one meal a day in the school cafeteria. Duties and responsibilities include hall management and supervision, desk and on-call duties, emergency response and incident management, community and wellness programming, student support and discipline and committee work and community policy writing. Community Coordinators serve as front-line responders for student and residence hall emergencies.

Community Coordinators serve "in loco parentis" for each student residing at NCSSM and, along with counselors, academic advisors, and parents/guardians, are an integral member of the student support team. In addition, Community Coordinators are the primary point of contact for students' families and work closely with faculty and staff members across campus to support students. Community Coordinators are responsible for building community within their designated residence hall and serving as a primary resource for their residents. Community Coordinators predominantly work non-traditional hours either directly with students or on a rotating duty shift; evening and weekend work are required. Community Coordinators are considered mandatory employees for the following events: emergency closings; adverse weather; and public health emergencies.

Experience in residential life, education, recreational programming, and wellness as well as experience working with high school age populations. Candidates will work extensively with google apps and sites. Strong written and spoken communication skills are required.

  • Coordination - Operations: Ability to coordinate and manage a broad scope of work operations and processes to meet programmatic expectations and outcomes.

  • Program Management: Ability to identify and understand student service issues, client needs, and matters of a recurring nature to effectively address and resolve the issue. Initiate creative programming to engage student participation. Ability to collect, research, and analyze information for processing, monitoring, or measuring data. Ability to develop some internal processes and prioritizes workload. Ability to generate non-standard reports. May require ability to function as a team member of more than one student service program team or specific area of expertise. May require ability to assign and review the work of others. Ability to mentor and assist others in various areas of technical expertise. Ability to conduct training for groups and individuals.

  • Client/Customer Service: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with client/customer in order to initiate, facilitate and complete work in assigned student service program areas. Ability to independently interpret policy and procedure within delegated authority when responding to client/customer requests and non-standard issues. Ability to recognize how individual decisions impact other program areas and their goals. Ability to employ de-escalation techniques and conflict management strategies when appropriate. Ability to understand the role of clients in their work environment.

  • Managing Work and Performance: Ability to review work of student workers and staff upon completion to assess and problem solve. Ability to review accomplishments of the unit over a short-range period to insure that performance and service meet the required standards.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree and at least two years of related experience in residence life, education, recreational programming, wellness, as well as experience working with high school age populations.

Candidates must possess a valid driver's license with no serious driving-related convictions.

Vacation: SHRA employees earn from 14 days to 26 days per year based on years of state service. Leave accruals for part-time and less than 12 month employees are pro-rated. Leave is earned monthly.

Sick Leave: 12 days per year. Leave accruals for part-time and less than 12 month employees are pro-rated.

Additional Leave: Family Medical Leave (FMLA), Paid Parental Leave (PPL), Civil Leave, Extended Illness, Short/Long Term Disability, Family Illness Leave, Military Leave, Community Service Leave, Bonus Leave, Voluntary Shared Leave and Leave Without Pay.

Retirement: Required participation for all employees working 3/4 time or more. Option (1) Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees are vested for retirement after 5 years. Option (2) The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees in ORP are vested after 5 years of participating in ORP. As a participant in either retirement program, you are automatically covered for short-term disability (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost), long term disability (eligible after 5 year of service/no cost). Death benefit of minimum $25,000/maximum $50,000 based on previous 12 month salary (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost).

Supplemental Retirement Plans: Supplemental retirement plans provide an additional opportunity to help you reach your retirement goals. Supplemental Plan offerings such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) on a Roth (after-tax) or pre-tax contributions.

Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees.

Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option - 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.
