Speech Therapy Assistant

Primary Purpose:

The speech therapist assistant is responsible for contributing to the educational system as a
unit and to the growth of each student assigned for speech therapy. The therapist shall
assist each student to develop skills, to acquire knowledge, and to realize his or her
potential.

Terms of Employment:
Salary: In accordance with the annual salary schedule approved by the Management
Board of the Freestone-Navarro Bi-County Co-Op. 10 months / 187 days per year, term or
Probationary contract, as applicable

Qualifications:

Minimum Certification/Education:
State License/Bachelor's Degree

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Patience and understanding of the needs in dealing with handicapped persons. Must have
the ability to communicate with various levels of the handicapped students and their
parents; and a general understanding of all their individual needs

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Keeps informed of and complies with state, district, and school regulations and
policies for classroom teachers.
2. Works with supervising SLP to develop and implement plans for the speech therapy
program.
3. Works with supervising SLP to prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for
individual student differences.
4. Presents therapy according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency
board policies, administrative regulations, and state licensing board.
5. Employs a variety of therapy techniques and media, consistent with the needs and
capabilities of the student groups involved.
6. Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of speech.
7. Works with supervising SLP to evaluate students and sends progress reports to
parents as appropriate.

8. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents.
9. Establishes control in the classroom and administers discipline in accordance with
board policies and administrative regulations.
10. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and
administrative regulation.
11. Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials used
for speech therapy.
12. Attends and participates in faculty meetings as appropriate.
13. Participates in the in-service education program.
14. Assumes responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and may sponsor
outside activities approved by the school.
15. Maintains a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and
community members.
16. Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning and implementing
instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
17. Works to maintain and improve professional skills and knowledge.
18. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal and/or special education director.
19. Works with supervising SLP to assess the accomplishments of students on a regular
basis.
