Mental Health Clinician, Center for Counseling and Student Development Job no: 500714 College / VP Area:Vice President for Student Life Work type: Staff Location: Newark Categories: Health Services, Full Time PAY GRADE: 31E CONTEXT OF THE JOB: Under the general direction of the Director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD), the Mental Health Clinician (MHC) engages in clinical service and engagement in consultation with students, faculty, and staff when appropriate. The MHC is a member of a large counseling center comprised of clinical staff members, psychiatry, and numerous doctoral-level trainees. CCSD is department within the Student Life Wellbeing Portfolio, which also includes Student Wellness & Health Promotion, Student Health Services, and Strategic Wellbeing & Training. The four departments are under the leadership of the Assistant Vice President, Student Life and Wellbeing. The aim of the units is to advance ethical care and a comprehensive, integrated approach to the health and wellbeing needs of all UD students. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide comprehensive individual, couples, and/or group counseling services to diverse students with a wide range of concerns including but not limited to the following: adjustment issues, interpersonal relationships, stress and time management, conflict issues, anxiety, depression, grief, and loss, gender and sexuality, suicidality, and substance abuse. Utilize a model of therapy that is appropriate for the needs of the client. Promptly maintain clinical records following legal statutes and ethical codes. Provide crisis intervention and coverage including participation in the Counselor-On-Duty (COD) rotation. Provide crisis consultation and intervene as appropriate to preserve the safety of the client. Provide information and support to facilitate psychiatric hospitalization for students as required. Provide information, referral, and psychoeducation for individuals who are eligible for services at CCSD. Consult with concerned families/friends of students, staff, and faculty, as requested, and within the limits of confidentiality and privacy. Create and deliver educational outreach programs on topics related to mental health. Establish group therapy, outreach, and programming for racial/ethnic populations that have historically been underserved. Collaborate with Student Health, Student Wellness & Health Promotion, and Strategic Wellbeing & Training staff in sharing necessary information to ensure the safety and well-being of students. Represent the Counseling center at campus events as needed. Other duties assigned by the Director of CCSD. QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree counseling, social work, or marriage and family, with a minimum of five years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Must be independently licensed in the state of Delaware before hire. Experience providing mental health services to people 17 to 25 years of age. Experience and a history of providing services to diverse populations including BIPOC, LBGTQ+ populations, First Generation college students, and various physical and health abilities. Experience leading group therapy. Knowledge of addictions counseling and harm reduction Adherence to professional development and training for the maintenance of state licensure. Excellent written skills and experience with timely client notes. Experience with the process of diagnosis and writing treatment plans to guide therapy. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of the professional counseling team within the administrative structure of the Division of Student Life. Knowledge of the link between job responsibilities and the overall goals of the University of Delaware. Ability to maintain stable performance and emotional control when faced with opposition, pressure, or alternative approaches from others and/or during stressful conditions. Ability to adapt easily to change and adapt in response to new information or shifts in the situation. Ability to communicate in a positive, compassionate, and professional manner with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and other divisions in the college. Ability to deliver quality service in a professional, compassionate manner with respect for the dignity and identities of all that enter the Counseling Center.
