The Optical Technician assists other team members and works independently in the execution of the position’s key responsibilities.  This is a great opportunity to be a part of a revolutionary consumer product from implementation of design through initial production and beyond. This position will work closely with our mechanical engineering, optical and industrial design teams.  This position reports to the Director Mechanical Engineering.  The job is based in Belmont, CA, and requires that you be onsite and not remote.

Responsibilities:

  • Support product development with imaging system optical designs, component selection, and tolerance analysis
  • Support design engineers in the development of the assembly processes for new optical assembly designs – including assembly of prototype designs
  • Support design engineers in the evaluation of prototype assemblies and light sources – specifically evaluating optical characteristics, image quality (MTF), light polarization measurement, thermal characteristics
  • Support engineering efforts with the assembly of prototype optical systems including positioning and alignment of optical elements and use of optical grade UV and thermal epoxies
  • Maintain detailed laboratory notes of the results of various evaluation experiments
  • Provide analysis of results of experiments for a few-to-many test samples
  • Maintain laboratory work areas for optical prototype assembly, evaluation, and testing – insuring key equipment is consistently operational and meets calibration standards
  • Evaluate new test/process equipment and tools and make recommendations to management
  • Maintain database of laboratory test results that can be accessed for comparison of data from various evaluation samples
  • Provide documentation of prototype assembly procedures that can be used for subsequent manufacturing process documentation
  • Assist design engineers in the development specialized tooling for the assembly of optical systems
  • Provide training in laboratory procedures and protocols for new employees and occasion part-time personnel supporting Optical design activities. Provide training in the proper handling, care, and cleaning of optical components
  • Assist in development efforts to bring prototype optical designs into high-volume, low-cost manufacturing
  • Maintain organization of the optical materials and components in the optics lab and monitor use of disposable cleaning and handling materials
  • Support continuous improvement efforts for products, both in terms of performance and cost/yield
