Job Overview

The Optometrist reports to the Chief Program Director to help design Optometry services and provide outpatient comprehensive optometric care services to patients primarily in long term care settings. The Optometrist will provide preventative and health maintenance service as well as utilize an electronic medical record for charting.

This role is community based and travel to long term care facilities is essential.

Responsibilities and Expectations

Initial Responsibilites in Designing Optometry Services:

  • Assist Chief Program Officer to create the Optometry program
  • Assist the front office in developing the electronic medical record workflow (procedure codes, payers, etc)
Ongoing Optometrist Responsibilities:
  • Examine eyes, using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities such as glaucoma or color blindness.
  • Analyze and review test results, reports and develop a treatment plan.
  • Adhere to current disease management protocols, and key clinical pathways, and use them to improve clinical performance.
  • Prescribe, supply, fit and adjust eyeglasses, and other vision aids.
  • Prescribe medications to treat eye diseases if state laws permit.
  • Consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologist or other health care practitioner if additional medical treatment is determined necessary.
  • Assist in the review of primary care protocols and patient education materials in collaborative with the Chief Program Director.
  • Remove foreign bodies from the eye.
  • Prescribe therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision.
Schedule:
  • Monday to Friday
Ability to commute/relocate:
  • Rhode Island: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)
Education:
  • Master's (Preferred)
License/Certification:
  • Optometry License (Preferred)
Work Location: Multiple Locations

Requirements

Qualifications - Required
  • Must have completed a two-year opticianry program from an accredited school.
  • Must be licensed as an optometrist in Rhode Island
Skills & Experience
  • State-issued license for optometry and O.D.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of medicine
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
  • Ability to diagnose and treat eye-related disorders and conditions
  • Ability to adapt to be flexibility to the needs of patients and environment
  • Ability to explain ideas and instructions to elderly population
  • Experience with electronic medical record


Salary Description

$60-$75 an hour
