Overview

Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Responsibilities

  • Assists Pharmacy Tech lead in the automation processes including, but not limited to: restocking the Automated Dispensing Machines, ensuring proper inventory levels, maintaining user profiles, validating the Automated Dispensing Machines formulary and generating reports to ensure medication availability.

  • Procures and distributes medication orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) accurately.

  • Fills physician orders, medication surgical kits, medication carts, or stock requisitions accurately.

  • Replenishes medications in emergency crash carts or floor stock areas accurately.

  • Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule.

  • Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures.

  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.

  • Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.

  • Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.

  • Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas accurately within specified time periods.

  • Repackages bulk medications in unit dose packages accurately per established procedures.

  • Contributes to the effective operation of the department.

  • completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner

  • Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds.

  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.

  • Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.

  • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel.

  • Answers requests in the department and makes stat deliveries to patient care areas when requested

  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documentation in appropriate locations.

  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication.

  • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well-organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.

  • Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department.

  • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.

  • Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned.

  • Maintains competence required for current job title/position.

  • Maintains current technician certification.

  • Attends pharmacy staff meetings.

  • Participates in orientation, education, and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.

  • Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements (see attached competence assessment/skills list).

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED

Required Licensure and Certifications

  • Texas State Board of Pharmacy Licensed Pharmacy Technician.

  • Nationally certified as Pharmacy Technician per Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

  • Sterile Compounding Certification. ACPE Nationally Certified.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

  • Medication automation duties involving maintaining of patient accounts, resolving medical discrepancies and providing nurse access.

Pay Range

$14.08 - $19.36 /hour
