The Villages Charter School (VCS) opened in August 2000 and is one of the most successful public charter schools in Florida. In fact, VCS has been a "High Performing Charter School", earned a "School of Excellence" and has received 20 straight "A" ratings from the Florida Department of Education This year, VCS earned the “Cognia School and Systems of Distinction” from the international accreditation group Cognia.

The Villages Charter School spans two campuses. Our Buffalo Ridge campus has three elementary attendance centers and one middle school building. Our newest campus, “Middleton”, opened in August 2023 with a K-8 center and a state-of-the-art high school complex.

VCS currently serves over 3700 students, kindergarten through 12th grades with an overall capacity of 6500 (500 students per grade level) across both campuses.

DESCRIPTION:

The Villages Charter School is accepting applications for an Elementary School Guidance Counselor for the 2024-2025 School year.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

To provide an educational atmosphere in which students will move toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth and maturation in accordance with the mission and goals of The Villages Charter School and the District.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The expectations include the following and other duties as assigned:

  • May register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
  • Assist students in course selection.
  • Maintain student records and maintain confidentiality.
  • Resolve student's educational handicaps.
  • Discover and develop special abilities of students.
  • Implement strategies to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on student records
  • Participate and help plan guidance field trips to schools, colleges, and industry for interested students.
  • Make recommendations to colleges for admission and scholarships.
  • Arranges for tutors and summer school work.
  • Guides students in their participation in school and community activities.
  • Work with students on an individual basis and in small groups to solve personal problems related to home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustments, academics, attendance, and discipline.
  • Organize conferences with parents whenever necessary.
  • Interprets the guidance program to the community.
  • Provides in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
  • Advise administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline.
  • Assist in the orientation of new faculty members.
  • Participates in workshops and other in-service activities.
  • Accepts a share of responsibility for co/extracurricular activities if assigned.
  • Attends and takes part in faculty meetings.
  • Assist in supervision and control of all students during work day and during emergency conditions as assigned by the principal.
  • Screens and refers students for the exceptional student education program.
  • Help to carry out and to administer state and county testing done in the school.
  • Provides developmental guidance for each classroom.
  • Screen and refer students for attendance problems.
  • Secure and maintain required information and records for each student in the exceptional program.
  • Coordinates the efforts of the school, special services, and community resources in providing for the needs of pupils.
  • Works with the Principal and administrative team in evaluating the advisory and remedial programs.
  • All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelors Degree or higher from an accredited educational institute.
  • One to Two years of related experience and/or training
  • Must hold or be eligible for certification by the State of Florida in School Counseling.
  • Such additional or alternative qualifications to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Noise level in the work environment is moderate.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be 211 days beginning on July 1. Benefits shall be paid consistent with the VCS policy. Length of the work year and hours of employment are those established by the Board.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of TVCS policy on evaluations of personnel.
