CLASS DEFINITION:

Positions in this class are characterized by their ability to conduct the health services program at each assigned school site for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of health of pupils and school personnel in accordance with state law, county regulation, and district policies and procedures. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, positions in the class are differentiated by the credentials, degree of skill and expertise required to perform successfully with the assignment and the degree of involvement in other District activities.

POSITION DEFINITION:

Under general supervision to provide general health services and specialized health care at an assigned school site(s), coordinate health services with other site services to ensure student needs are met, works with parents and staff to provide staff development as necessary about particular health issues, maintains confidentiality in all relative maters, and to do related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Conducts medical case finding, screening and referral activities related to health defects of selected pupils
• Refers parents of pupils needing medical care or other health care assistance to appropriate community resources
• Serves as a resource to teachers and other staff on health related issues
• Coordinate administration of medication to students during the school day
• Meets with parents and staff in an effort to identify causes and prevention of illness and potential health problems
• Provides health counseling services to staff, students, parents and community members
• Provides staff development as necessary on a variety of health related issues including specialized health care plans
• Serves as a resource to staff members in the presentation of sensitive health instruction, primarily in the area of growth and development and family life issues
• Provides for immunization and student physical screening as a condition of school admission

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education and Experience:

Required is a B.A./B.S. degree from an accredited college or university, nursing degree and a credential authorizing service as a school nurse.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of and ability to apply current health care practices, procedures and techniques, State Education Code, County Regulations and District and school site policies relative to health care issues. The ability to relate to others both orally and in written form, ability tot work effectively with parents, students and other professionals, understand and follow both oral and written directions, ability to give clear, concise instructions, work within an established schedule, ability to respond in emergency situations with composure, confidence and expertise, interpret and follow district regulations and policies.

Licenses and other Requirements:

Valid child/adult CPR and First Aid Certificate

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
• Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
• Ability to conduct verbal conversation in English and other designated languages
• Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
• Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, walk
• Able to stand on hard flooring for sustained periods of time
• Able to walk on hard flooring for sustained periods of time
• Able to climb slopes, stairs and ladders
• Able to push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment
• Able to lift up to 30 pound frequently and 75 pounds occasionally
