GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Working in concert with the pharmacy team under the general direction of the Pharmacy Director, the Pharmacy Technician follows established policies and procedures to perform activities that are integral to the operation of the pharmacy department at Newton Wellesley. Activities include sterile product manufacturing (both hazardous and non-hazardous), dispensing, training personnel, automated medication systems management, inventory management, checking expiration dates on medications, environmental management, distributive functions and ensuring cleanliness of the IV room and all equipment. Helps develop and maintain the competency standards for the processes and assessment of the competency of pharmacy staff. Coordinates day to day functions of the department and will direct other ancillary staff to ensure efficient departmental operations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inventory Control

  1. Order medication through correct account, receive, check-in, rotate, and store all medications and supplies received from manufacturers, wholesalers, specialty pharmacies and materials management.
  2. Donning appropriate safety garb when necessary as per USP 800 guidelines.
  3. Comply with Drug supply chain security act (DSCSA)
  4. Understands contractual obligations when ordering medication
  5. Checks and stocks automated medication dispensing devices under the direction of a pharmacist.
  6. Reports damage, incorrect orders or shortages to wholesaler
  7. Identifies industry drug shortages and reports to pharmacy manager.
  8. Determine which inventory items should be ordered.
  9. Weekly inventory of selected items.
  10. Participate in the semi-annual physical inventory of all pharmaceutical products.
  11. Identify, segregate and log expired medications and complete electronic waste transactions
  12. Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the pharmacy.
Environmental Management
  1. USP and USP- - incorporation of regulatory changes into daily practice including requirements for clean room maintenance/cleaning and specific aseptic procedures
  2. Surface and environmental testing requirements
  3. Knowledge of and adherence to NIOSH and USP guidelines for handling hazardous materials
  4. Equipment selection and maintenance (CADD pumps etc)
  5. Monitor and report on pharmacy quality assurance activities to meet the requirements of USP , and in pharmacy keeper.
  6. Participate in required media fill, garbing, and fingertip testing.
Operating Room Pharmacy Activities
  1. Checks and stocks all automated medication dispensing devices (located in the anesthesia workrooms, med rooms, med onc, and the pharmacy vault) under the direction of a pharmacist.
  2. Updates and restocks Code Carts under the direction of a pharmacist.
  3. Completes quarterly Audits for the OR pharmacy, oncology pharmacy, cardiology, radiology and all automated medication dispensing devices.
  4. Identifies, segregates and logs expired medications.
  5. Compounds medications on OR daily pharmacy request form.
  6. Cycle count pharmacy narcotic vault daily with pharmacist
  7. Order inventory and complete all facets of EPIC inventory maintenance, rotate, and store all medication and supplies received from manufacturers, wholesalers and the Materials Management Department.
  8. Staff in infusion pharmacy when needed
Sterile Products Manufacturing
  1. Prepare patient-specific, chemotherapy & supportive medication products using accepted techniques with adherence to USP , USP and NIOSH guidelines
  2. Don appropriate safety garb as per USP guidelines.
  3. Double checks drug/solution and calculations as part of quality process.
  4. Use standard reference sources to describe the general chemical and physical properties (e.g., light and temperature sensitivity, toxicity, solution stability, set and filter characteristics) of all drugs prepared in the sterile products area.
  5. Perform arithmetical calculations required for the preparation of sterile products.
  6. Demonstrates knowledge of common dosing ranges of medications, intravenous administration solution and set requirements for those agents.
  7. Assists in training of pharmacy staff in hazardous and non hazardous compounding, medication handling and preparation (under supervision of pharmacist).
  8. Uses a spill kit appropriately.
Workflow Management
  1. Coordination of pharmacy activities related to chemotherapy order entry and drug preparation and /or OR pharmacy activities.

EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE

  • 2 years of hospital-based experience preferred
