  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • The Lead Surgical Technologist (LST) at the Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Surgical Center will work under the supervision of the Operating Room Clinical Nurse Manager. In addition to performing all the tasks of a Surgical Technologist, the lead technologist will perform administrative duties to include assisting the with Operating Room Clinical Nurse Manager staff scheduling, orientation, and performance reviews. The LST will function as a role model and mentor to the other technologists.

    • Education
      • Required: Successful completion of accredited Surgical Technology training program, in lieu of completion of training program 5+ years of experience required; High School Diploma or equivalent
      • Preferred: Graduate of an accredited AA/AS degree program
    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), Certification as a surgical technologist (CST or TS-C or CORST); OR graduate of an accredited AA/AS degree program, with expectation that certification as a surgical technologist will be obtained within three years from date of hire
    • Experience
      • Required: Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a surgical technologist.
      • Preferred: Two (2) of multispecialty scrub experience or orthopedic specialty, Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a lead tech, or comparable position
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Enforces Policies and Procedures. Teaches and models strict aseptic technique.
    • Models excellent "situational awareness". Anticipates surgeon's needs. Promotes efficient room turnover. Maintains patient dignity.
    • Models and teaches fastidious attention to counts. Helps to enforce the hospital's counts policy.
    • Assists and advises the CDS and SLS in technologist scheduling and provides input on performance reviews.
    • Acts as a liaison to the technologists at the other surgical locations.
    • Acts as a liaison between the OR and Central Sterile Processing.
    • Works with the OR Educator to develop training modules for new procedures.
    • Works with the OR Educator to coordinate training, orientation, and precepting of new technologists.
    • Partners with the RN Clinical Managers or designee to maintain close and continuous communication with them.
    • Represents the technologists at meetings of the OR leadership.
    • Assists in a year-over-year reduction of lost instruments and overall cost savings.
    • Assists the Supply Manager in setting and maintaining supplies at par levels.
    • Provides input regarding capital equipment needs, assists Service Group Supervisor with researching and obtaining information and quotes. Monitors instruments and equipment to see that repairs/replacements are completed.

    • Develops close communication with specialty surgeons and ensures surgeon satisfaction in collaboration with others.
    • Responsible for project management related to specialty improvement or LEAN initiative annually.
    • Sits on Quality Improvement and/or Value Analysis related committee and offers strategies to improve efficiently.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
