Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the Environmental Scientist performs a broad range of work concerning present and future environmental, environmental health, and natural resource management issues related to protecting California's natural resources, agricultural productivity, and public health. Incumbents may oversee and implement enforcement of various environmental and environmental health-related laws and regulations; review reports and other documents to determine the effects of proposed activities on environmental health; develop regulatory measures and implement enforcement of environmental standards; develop recommendations regarding environmental programs as these may be affected by scientific findings; develop and assess alternatives for mitigation of hazards to the public and environment; conduct or participate in remedial human and environmental health investigations; meet and confer with individuals and groups to obtain compliance with laws and regulations, concerning environmental requirements of California and Federal governments; conduct trainings to stakeholders; evaluate and oversee local enforcement agencies; implement enforcement of environmental standards; analyze legislation, regulations, plans, policies, procedures practices, criteria, and guidelines; inspect permitted facilities, regulated activities, and contaminated or environmentally sensitive sites, participate in hearings and field investigations as a staff expert for environmental matters; and prepare presentations, reports, and correspondence on the above mentioned tasks.

Working Conditions
The incumbents are in a single floor building, under artificial lighting; and sit for moderate periods of time. The collection of samples as indicated for this position requires the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds, bend, squat, and climb over boxes, containers, or pallets; travel by automobile or air may be required to different areas of the State. There is regular field work performed, requiring the ability to maneuver over uneven ground and work in outdoor conditions. Occasional statewide travel is required; travel within the region (Kern county to Santa Clara county) is weekly. Occasional irregular work schedules may be required. Travel may include overnight stays several days each month.
NOTE: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
