The department manages 39 facilities including recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation.

Montgomery County Recreation is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Recreation Specialist to oversee and implement a wide range of programs, activities, classes, and events at our 55+ Senior Center, aimed at helping older residents thrive. The Recreation Specialist will play a crucial role in creating a welcoming environment that promotes active participation and enhances the quality of life for our diverse senior community.
What You'll Be Doing
As the Recreation Specialist (Senior Programming), you will:
- Lead and manage recreational programs and large special events that align with team and department priorities, focusing on serving the needs of a diverse community.
- Foster connections with individuals and local communities, ensuring that programs are culturally inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all participants.
- Plan and implement strategies for program development, including goal-setting, budget management, program assessment, and using data-driven insights to refine and improve offerings.
- Exhibit flexibility and adaptability in handling dynamic work environments, shifting priorities, and varying tasks.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal staff, volunteers, and contractors to deliver high-quality programs, while monitoring and evaluating performance.
- Oversee administrative duties such as scheduling, registration, and program management using recreation software (e.g., ActiveNet, RecTrac).
- Ensure the proper handling of finances, including revenue collection, cash management, and inventory control, while preparing and submitting reports as required.
- Enforce policies and procedures regarding supply procurement, facility maintenance, and compliance with county regulations.
- Contribute to the collection and analysis of data to assess program effectiveness and support team performance measurement.
- Lead marketing and communication efforts to promote programs and maintain positive relationships with the communications team, ensuring accurate information is shared with the public.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners, including senior living facilities, civic organizations, faith-based groups, and local residents to support and promote departmental initiatives.
- Communicate proactively with both internal and external stakeholders to build strong, collaborative relationships and ensure exceptional customer service.
- Experience working in cross-cultural environments or a commitment to improving cultural competency.

- Candidates must successfully complete a background investigation and a medical exam with drug/alcohol screening prior to appointment.
- This role requires flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions and physical demands may be required.
- The Recreation Specialist may be asked to provide coverage and support across multiple programs during operating hours.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible recreational specialist work involving planning, organizing, supervising and implementing an area-wide, countywide or special interest recreation program.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree
- Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be substituted.

Leave Benefits
Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Our leave policies adhere to the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, and we provide six weeks of paid parental leave for new parents.
Retirement Benefits
All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.
Tuition Assistance & Student Loan Forgiveness
Montgomery County employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position. Free Mass Transit Benefit
