Job Summary The Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Internal Medicine is seeking a highly competent, motivated and organized individual to serve as the Financial Intermediate Manager. The Financial Intermediate Manager plays a critical fiduciary role in overseeing and managing the financial operations, processes and reporting within the division and department. Reporting directly to, and in partnership with the Division Administrator, candidates for this position are expected to exhibit strong analytical skills and have a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a complex organization. Managing a team of three, the finance team is responsible for a wide range of services to support faculty and staff in the Division of Rheumatology. Must possess the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. A positive attitude, strong customer service and communication skills are imperative to be successful in this role. This role requires a thorough understanding of financial principles, excellent analytical skills and the ability to leads a team ensuring accurate financial management and compliance with relevant regulations. Will provide expert advisory capability and interpretation on all levels of financial activity. Plans, coordinates and executes policy implementation applicable to the installation of improved financial operations. Provides specialized technical analysis to determine present and future financial performance. Directs the development and implementation of new concepts and techniques for financial information analysis. Represent the division on various committees and teams Work within the rheumatology administrative team and division to establish sound strategic plans for future growth of our tripartite missions. Budget Management: In collaboration with senior management, develop, monitor and manage all funds budgets across the division ensuring adherence to financial plans. Work closely with divisional leadership to develop budget proposals, provide forecasting reports, implement budgetary adjustments, and align financial resources with strategic priorities. Analyzing financial data and performance metrics, provide insights and recommendations for decision making. Prepare financial reports and presentations for senior management highlighting financial trends and operating risks. Financial Reporting and Compliance: Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with sponsor, university and Medical School regulatory requirements and organizational policies. Conduct and support internal audits and coordinate with auditors to ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards. Serve as the division effort specialist. Develop, monitor, and process effort changes for all UM and VA faculty and staff members including effort timelines and VA/UM MOU?s. This also includes the analysis of protected effort, clinical time, grant restrictions, sabbaticals, etc. Operational Efficiency: Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy in financial operations. Team Leadership and Development: Lead and mentor a team of research administration professionals in pre- and post-award fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement. Delegate tasks effectively and provide support to team members in achieving their objectives. Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to improve team performance. Foster a culture of transparency, honesty, and ethical decision-making within the team and the organization Faculty support: To provide financial forecasting expertise and management support to assigned faculty and funds, predominantly sponsored basic and clinical research grants, including clinical trials.This support includes, but is not limited to: proactively advising faculty on proper management of funds through monthly reconciling and analysis; proactively alerting faculty to budget deviations and suggesting alternative appropriate courses of action to ensure projects are managed on budget; ensuring proper accounting of funds; with guidance from faculty, budgeting funds consistent with sponsor/donor intent; ensuring encumbrances are properly accounted for; ensuring funds are managed consistent with sponsor and institutional policies or donor intent; establishing and monitoring subawards & subcontracts; advising administrative and lab staff on allowability & allocability for procurement including review and approval of expenses; reviewing receivables and invoicing for sponsored activity as appropriate; liaise on behalf of division faculty and staff with Sponsored Programs and ORSP staff as appropriate to ensure projects are setup and closed out consistent with expectations as well as sponsor and institutional policies; ensure supporting documentation is compiled and appropriately filed as needed; coordinate with clinical research and CTSU staff to ensure all activity is fully accounted for; manage post-award change requests, Uniform Guidance reports, Other Support, progress report and other related sponsored program and research related activities; Act as financial administrator for NIH T32 training grant Other duties as assigned Required Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in a financially related field with a minimum of 3-5 or more years of experience in financial management. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly and concisely. Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a team environment interacting effectively with faculty and peers. Strong knowledge of university and sponsored projects financial regulations, compliance requirements, and accounting principles. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills by cultivating trust and rapport with a various constituents including divisional and departmental faculty and staff, medical school and University administration, and sponsors. Proficiency in financial software and tools (e.g. PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office). Demonstrated ability to act with integrity and maintain confidentiality. Desired Qualifications* Experience with eResearch and Wolverine Access (MReports, Financials/Resources, HR Management, Business Objects, etc.). Experience in the pre- and post-award administration of federally, industry, and foundation sponsored projects (especially NIH), as well as knowledge of Sponsored Program and ORSP procedures and operations. Previous experience working with a variety of other departments with the University and/or outside (specifically the Ann Arbor VA Health System). An understanding clinical billing is strongly desired. Work Locations This is hybrid position with the opportunity for remote work.
