The Finance Manager leads all aspects of Finance. As the primary individual in finance, this role builds and manages the annual budget and supports leadership in making financial decisions that align with the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the organization. This is a highly collaborative role that requires cross collaboration in all areas of the organization. From an external perspective, this position works with and builds relationships with auditors, vendors, benefits brokers and external stakeholders in matters relating to finance. This position also engages the Board of Directors in creating and managing annual and ongoing budget and cash flow projections; including developing program budget worksheets, review of budget narratives, and financial reporting. This role requires cross-departmental communication and collaboration and the capacity to build stability while fostering creativity.

What You’ll Do:

  • Oversee the daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries.
  • Ensure timely, accurate month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Prepare financial statements and reports for senior management, the board, grantors, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Manage cash flow, investments, and financial performance against the annual budget.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP, and relevant federal and state regulations.
  • Assure that staff payroll and benefits accounts are properly administered.
  • Assist with annual audit, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Maintain robust internal controls to safeguard financial assets and ensure accuracy.
  • Monitor grant and fiscal sponsorship revenue and expenses to guarantee accuracy.
  • Support fiscal sponsorship program team in communications with, and distributing available funds, to film project teams.
  • Review and support the creation of grant, vendor, and fiscal sponsorship related contracts.
  • Assist with the implementation of new software.
  • Collaborate with the team to streamline processes, documentation and improve financial management practices.
  • Monitor and analyze financial data to identify trends and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Remain up to date with changes in accounting regulations and best practices.
  • Plan and facilitate monthly finance meetings with managers.
  • Work with the team in supporting the implementation of the strategic plan in regards to budget planning.
  • Facilitate our yearly budgeting process.
  • Support implementation and alignment of organizational values and commitments that center justice and equity, including directly addressing racism, injustice, and marginalization and their impacts.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience in the environmental, media, and/or nonprofit space.
  • 5+ years of experience with accounting and financial statements of non-profit organizations with at least a 4-5 million annual operating budget.
  • Experience selecting, troubleshooting cloud-based systems; advanced knowledge of accounting software, including experience with: Quickbooks Online, Bill.com, Gusto or other online payroll service, Brex, and commercial online banking systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and non-profit accounting including adherence to FASB rules for recording revenue and tracking restricted assets.
  • Understanding of Fiscal Sponsorship Programs (Model C Fiscal Sponsorship).
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity and rapid change and to identify creative solutions to obstacles.
  • Ability to juggle many essential responsibilities and projects at once.
  • Engages in building relationships with individuals and teams, organization-wide, and with external communities, through active communication of listening, responding, understanding.
  • Ability to develop, communicate, support and implement major initiatives.
  • Currently live in the Bay Area.

  • Work legally in the United States and maintain proper work authorization throughout employment.
  • Meet the physical requirements, which include:
    • Able to sit and stand for long periods.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
    • Able to do extended periods of work at a computer.
    • Able to assist with events, which includes lifting up to 35 lbs.
  • Work occasional evenings, and weekends.
  • Pass a background check

Additional Details

This is a hybrid position. Our team generally works remotely, but we do require that staff come to the office for team meetings and attend some in-person events. Our office is located in the Presidio in San Francisco. Candidates must be based in the Bay Area. The salary for this position is $100,000 annually. We offer a flexible schedule and an excellent benefits package, including generous paid time off, 100% coverage of employees’ health, dental and vision insurance, and participation in a 403b retirement plan with an employer contribution of 3%, after six months.
