Job Description

Elizabethtown College has multiple student mentor positions for different groups of students. All student mentors have the primary purpose of welcoming, mentoring, and guiding students to find their sense of belonging at Etown.

Job Duties

Essential Functions: All Student Mentors
• Actively participate in training to ensure an understanding of College policies, procedures, resources, and expectations; commitment to growing as a leader
• Guide students in their transition to and time at Etown to help them find their place at Etown
• Support students in reaching their goals, both academic and outside of the classroom
• Connect students with campus resources, such as peer tutoring, disability services, counseling services, student health, campus safety, library staff, academic advising, residence life, etc.
• Serve as a role model to students and share life experience when applicable to assist students in normalizing challenges that they may need to overcome
• Work as a strengths-based teammate with all student mentors, faculty, and staff
• Participate in College or department events as requested by supervisor, such as Open House, Accepted Student Day, New Student Orientation, position recruitment events, etc.
• Relay any concerns about students to supervisor; in the case of an emergency, contact Campus Safety immediately
• Understand and adhere to the College's Student Handbook, the specific student mentor Handbook, and the Code of Conduct
• Accurately log time worked in E-Clock and submit time card edits to supervisor each week by Sunday morning. Exception is RAs who do not complete time cards.

KINESIS MENTORS

Reports to: Director of the Momentum Program

Additional Functions:
• Kinesis mentors are paired with first-year, first-generation students in the Momentum program in order to support these students through a successful transition into college life. With a focus on academic advising, Kineses provide holistic support to their Momentees as they navigate their first year of college
• Attend and actively participate in Kinesis weekly training sessions in March-April
• Facilitate summer Zoom sessions with assigned Momentum students to assist with completion of the New Blue Jay To-Do List and answer questions about the college transition process
• Move back to campus one week before classes begin to participate in Kinesis orientation and to plan and facilitate Momentum pre-orientation, which occurs two days before New Student Orientation
• Meet weekly with assigned Momentum students in order to provide individualized support, with a focus on academic advising and classroom success
• Build and maintain positive relationships with Momentum students
• Attend monthly Kinesis team meetings and monthly check-ins with the Director of Momentum

PEER MENTORS

Reports to the Director of New Student/Family Orientation

Additional Functions:
• Guide new students and their families through June new student orientation (NSO) and August NSO; facilitate sessions and answer questions
• Mentor students from assigned FYS throughout the first semester related to the College mission and values, including strengths-based leadership, service, and integrity
• Work with FYS faculty member to ensure students are supported; this includes regular meetings and communication during the fall semester
• Facilitate FYS Roundtable sessions for peer students during the fall semester (Wednesdays at 11:00 am)
• Peer Mentors are expected to be on campus the week of June NSO for training and NSO (typically the last full week of June). In addition, peer mentors are expected to move back to campus one week before classes begin in August for training and NSO.
• Peer Mentors must be committed to creating a sense of belonging for our students; NSO is a crucial event for our new students, and it takes a lot of hard work and dedication from our peer mentors to make NSO a success.

UBUNTU MENTORS

Resports to the Director of Student Diversity, Equity & Belonging

Additional Functions:
• Connect with mentees so that every student of color has a mentor who can reflect a shared experience, predict issues underrepresented students may face, and help eliminate barriers and navigate difficulties
• Meet regularly with mentees and utilize the fifteen-week framework as a guide for the fall semester
• Through connection, help students of color develop affinity and connectedness with the College and campus community
• Collaborate with identity-based clubs and organizations, represented by the Diversity Board, along with the Mosaic Scholars to implement programs supporting students of diverse backgrounds
• Mentors will work a minimum of two hours and a maximum of five hours per week

RESIDENT ASSISTANT

Reports to: Residence Life Professional Staff

Additional Functions:
• Build community with residents in assigned residential community by planning events, connecting with individual students, creating bulletin boards, and addressing any concerns
• Facilitate floor meetings and the development of Community Standards for residents
• Ensure resident belonging and safety by engaging with residents and holding office hours from 8-10 pm, participating in on-call rotation for assigned community (including answering the on-call phone from 8 pm-2 am), mediating conflicts, conducting community rounds and health & safety walk-throughs
• Effectively complete administrative tasks, such as checking RA mailbox and email daily, hanging flyers, completing reports and documenting incidents
• Participate in opening and closing processes including assessing rooms and common spaces for concerns prior to start of each semester, following each semester and breaks as required

Required Qualifications

Requirements: All Student Mentors
• Sophomore, junior, or senior
• Maintain full-time status as an undergraduate student at Elizabethtown College
• Remain in good academic and social standing
• Abide by Elizabethtown College policies and procedures as represented in the Student Handbook
• Demonstrated leadership experience
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication abilities, as well as the ability to collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders
• Understanding of Etown campus resources and programs to support student belonging and success
• Strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging

Requirements: Specific Student Mentor Positions
Kinesis: must be a participant in the Momentum program
Ubuntu: must be a participant/mentee in the Ubuntu program
Resident Assistant: if hired for the position, student must live on campus during the contracted time
