Summary:
The Director of Pharmacy Services plans, organizes, directs, and monitors all aspects of Pharmacy Services and related activities. The Director of Pharmacy Services is responsible for strategic planning in support of the Ballad Mission and Vision; developing long-term and short-term goals and objectives; facilities development; equipment evaluation and selection; personnel selection, assignment, development, and evaluation; other resource allocation; and customer relations. The Director is responsible for ensuring that Ballad policies are consistently observed, and for the development and implementation of appropriate departmental policies and procedures. The Director is accountable for compliance with all pertinent TJC Standards, and with local, state and federal regulations. As an integral part of the Washington County management team, the Director is required to participate in the organization's Performance Improvement programs and to cooperate with interdepartmental projects to improve quality of service and reduce cost. The Director is accountable for practicing fiscal responsibility by developing realistic annual operating and capital budgets, conserving resources, and monitoring expenditures to ensure they remain within budgeted parameters. This position is responsible for flexing staffing to comply with established productivity standards. The Director will ensure that departmental facilities and equipment are regularly inspected and maintained in optimum operating condition. This position is responsible for maintaining the qualified and competent staff needed to provide quality service and for monitoring the activities of reporting managers and supervisors to ensure that ongoing educational opportunities, including attendance at organization-wide programs, are provided and that team members are treated with dignity, fairness, and consistency, within the guidelines set forth in the Ballad Human Resource Policies and Procedures. The Director is accountable for maintaining harmonious interactions between departmental team members and their customers, including patients, family members, visitors, physicians, clergy, other system team members, and the general public. The incumbent must ensure that departmental team members know and understand the Ballad Mission and Vision, and uphold its values. The Director is expected to set an example for all team members of commitment and loyalty to Ballad by openly supporting and participating in organizational projects and events. The incumbent is expected to lend technical assistance and act in a consultant role for other healthcare providers. The Director is accountable for maintaining technical expertise and for development of leadership skills through ongoing education, including participation in the Ballad Leadership Academy. The Director must be self-motivated and serve as a strong team leader and coach.

The Director of Pharmacy Services is expected to comply with the Ballad management philosophy which includes being accountable to the customer, fiscally responsible, and focused on improving performance outcomes. The Director will dedicate operational resources to developing the organization's intellectual capital, empowering team members to assume responsibility and accountability within the scope of their expertise, and acting as facilitator to the self-directed work groups that develop within the department. The Director is also expected to develop and promote collegiality with all other Directors to assure equitable sharing of resources, smooth work flow, understanding and support of one another's needs, and harmonious and productive relationships throughout the organization.

Scope of Service provided by the Department of Pharmacy Services encompasses neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient groups and includes the following:
- Patient care and monitoring at order entry, via clinical services, and by participation on multidisciplinary teams;
- Supporting safe and efficacious use of medications;
- Procuring, distributing, and storing of medications appropriately;
- Appropriate record keeping;
- Interpretation of physician medication orders;
- Preparation of medications for oral and/or topical use;
- Preparation of parenteral products;
- Provision of accurately labeled and dispensed medications in a timely manner (Dispensing of medications is prioritized as to degree of urgency based on the use of the terms "now", "stat", and "emergency". Orders that do not specify any urgency will be processed in a routine manner and available in a time frame of 2 hours or less.);
- Assisting in selection of medication therapy;
- Provision of medication information/education for physicians, patient care personnel, patients, and others as needed;
- Participation in a variety of educational activities for the community, patient care personnel, allied health personnel, medical and pharmacy students, and attending and resident physician staff;
- Promotion of cost-effective medication therapy;
- Assisting in medication use evaluation (including components of the Medication Use Process: Procuring, Prescribing, Dispensing, Administering, and Monitoring);
- Ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and accrediting bodies via maintenance of continuous service readiness;
- Appropriate use of technology;
- Facilitate reporting and review of adverse drug events (including adverse drug reactions and medication errors);
- Assuring proper use and control of investigational agents approved by the (Ballad) IRB;
- Supporting clinical pharmacy functions, including but not limited to, pharmacokinetics, nutritional support and pharmacotherapy consults;
- Maintaining effective continuous improvement processes;
- Assisting with the development and maintenance of medication-related policies and procedures and a medication formulary as a function of the multidisciplinary Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee;
- Appropriate interactions with and support of Ballad affiliate institutions.
- Appropriate interactions with our Colleges of Pharmacy with a particular focus on ETSU College of Pharmacy including provision of experiential practice sites.
- Shared management of co-funded positions with ETSU College of Pharmacy.

Requirements:
At a minimum, the Regional Director will possess a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy (PharmD preferred) and maintain appropriate licensure. A Master's in Business Administration degree and/or in a management discipline is preferred. The position requires a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in institutional pharmacy practice field including 5 years in a supervisory/management role. Experience in an academic medical center is desirable. The incumbent will be required to maintain technical expertise and to develop management/leadership skills through continuing education throughout tenure in this position.

BLS required, ACLS and/or PALS may be required based upon assigned job duties
