Operating Room Scrub Tech Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or Registered Professional Nurse, the Scrub Technician manages the instruments, supplies, and equipment required for surgical procedures. With a thorough understanding of the procedures being performed, the technician anticipates the surgeons' needs and ensures high-quality patient care by maintaining strict sterile techniques throughout the operation.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
  • Follow the guidelines set forth by New York Public Health Law 2824 regarding surgical technology and surgical technologists.
  • Perform nursing procedures in accordance with policies.
  • Verify and prepare all supplies and equipment before each surgical procedure.
  • Scrub in, set up, count instruments, and assist during the operation.
  • Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique.
  • Support the surgeon and RN with post-procedure care.
  • Handle and process specimens correctly.
  • Prepare instruments for decontamination.
  • Assist in preparing and organizing OR cases.
  • Follow protocols for Infection Control and Fire Safety.
  • Identify and report malfunctioning equipment.
  • Adhere to patient safety standards.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • Complete required competency training and attend all mandatory in-services.
  • Practice cost containment and complete 15 hours of Continuing Education Credits as mandated by New York State Law (effective January 1, 2015; implementation began July 1, 2016).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One of the following qualifications is required:
    • Graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program with certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from a nationally recognized certifying organization.
    • Completion of a military surgical technology program.
    • Evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for at least one year within the four years prior to the effective date of this regulation. Employers must confirm this employment in writing.
    • Employment in a federal government capacity performing related duties.
  • Prior experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred.
  • Certification from a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization.
  • For recent graduates: A 12-month grace period is provided following the successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technology program to obtain CST certification. Continued employment beyond this period requires proof of certification.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association is required.
