The City of Isle of Palms is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.

The Isle of Palms is a seven-mile-long barrier island located eight miles east of Charleston on the South Carolina coast. The island is bounded on the north by Hamlin Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway, on the east by Dewees Inlet and Dewees Island, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by Breach Inlet and Sullivan's Island. Isle of Palms is primarily a residential community with resort amenities and a relatively large commercial base when compared to other barrier island communities in the area. 

PARAMEDIC ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

       Under established protocols or the direct instruction of a physician, applies advanced life support skills to triage, rescue, treat injured or ill persons.

      Responds to medical emergencies throughout the city and in accordance with established mutual aid agreements.

      Provides patient care functions, including but not limited to, gathering patient information and medical history, performing patient exams, formulating a plan for treatment, and rendering treatment consistent with patient care protocols and or instructions.

       Obtains information from and provides explanation/counseling to patients, relatives and others involved related to the emergency.

      Directs medical activities at multiple patient scenes or mass casualty incidents until relieved by a qualified supervisor; performs triage; coordinates medical transportation of the sick and injured.

      Utilizes a wide variety of mobile medical equipment.

      Maintains the confidentiality of patient information as required by law. Completes medical incident reports, records patient information, completes incident and billing forms and forwards files as required by established protocols or practice.

      Inspects, tests, and maintains emergency aid equipment as needed through cleaning and or sanitizing, periodic maintenance checks, repair or referral for repair or replacement; maintains emergency vehicle and equipment in orderly and sanitary condition.

      Replenishes medications and supplies.

      Attends continuing education as required by the department to maintain skills as well as certification.

FIRE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:         

       Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents, that include fire suppression, hazardous material containment, water rescues, natural disasters, motor vehicle accidents or any other incident deemed an emergency.

       Responds with various watercraft to distressed boaters/swimmers.

       Assumes role as Incident Commander at the scene of an emergency until relieved by a higher-ranking individual.

       Ventilates burning buildings by making openings in the roof, floor, and walls of burning structures when necessary.

       Removes persons from burning structures.

       Lays and connects hose lines and operates nozzles to direct water flow.

       Performs salvage operations at the scene of the fire such as covering furniture and clearing of debris.

       Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on Fire Department equipment such as ladder trucks, pumpers, extinguishers and hoses.

       Performs emergency treatment to injured persons utilizing established first aid procedures.

       Participates in training courses to learn firefighting theory and practice, first aid, hydraulics, handling of hazardous materials and explosives, use of tools and knot tying.

       Performs routine tasks involving upkeep of fire station, fire apparatus, jet skis, boats, all terrain vehicles and grounds.

       Tests firefighting equipment to ensure that equipment is in proper working condition.

       Maintains physical and mental readiness and health in order to perform the job duties proficiently.

       Participates in fire prevention and community service programs such as courtesy home inspections, fire station tours, smoke detector installation and testing.

       May be called upon to suppress fires in neighboring communities.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Possession of a valid South Carolina Class E driver's permit within four weeks of employment.
  • Possession of a South Carolina Class E driver's license within six months of employment.
  • Completion of Emergency Medical Responder course and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation within six (6) months of employment and will be required to maintain certification.
  • Completion of requirements of NFPA, IFSAC or Pro Board, Firefighter I & Firefighter II.
  • Successful completion of NIMS, ICS or equivalency (IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800) within six months of hire.
  • Be certified as a Paramedic in the state of Suth Carolina.
