Summary Serves as a Maintenance Mechanic Helper under the general supervision of the Supervisory Maintenance Mechanic in the General Support Shop, with second level direction provided by the Maintenance Control Manager. Assists in a variety of helper tasks primarily involving basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, equipment inventory and operations, installations, and laborer. Also assists with tasks resulting in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures and utilities. Responsibilities Carpentry - assists journeyman in the full range of carpentry work involving in the maintenance and repair of the facility: Alterations, modifications and minor construction of items and structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness such as: framework, staircases, doors and windows, installing finished paneling and interior and exterior trim. Interprets drawings, blueprints and specifications. Plans and lays out work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction or needed repairs. Selects lumber, materials, and supplies. Measures and cuts materials to the required lengths and dimensions. Installs rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joists, floors, subfloors, panels, siding, sheathing, roofing, building paper, insulating materials, door and window frames, and interior and exterior trim. Installs structural and trim items by nailing, bolting, mortising, doweling and gluing. Planes, sands, and finishes completed work when necessary. Plumbing - Working with higher graded personnel, performs tasks incidental to the trade such as: Assists in the removal, assembly, laying or hanging of pipe by lifting, carrying, and handling fittings to the plumber, holding piping during assembly; and screwing or bolting pipe hangers to walls, floors or ceilings. Independently accomplishes routine tasks such as clearing simple stoppages; replacing washers in faucets; cutting or drilling previously marked holes and openings in walls or floors; carrying pipe fittings, tools and materials to and from work-site; measuring, cutting, threading, and bending marked pipe lengths; and making repairs to piping, fittings, and plumbing fixtures. Painting: Assists with the surface preparation and refinishing of all surfaces of buildings, structures, equipment, and furnishings where appearance as well as surface protection is important. Removes old finishes by power washing, dissolving, burning, scraping, sanding, wire brushing, and otherwise prepares surfaces for repainting. Prepares coating materials, paints, polyurethanes, stains by mixing and applying pre-coating agents and solvents. Tints, tones, matches, blends and mixes various additives in prescribed proportions and required consistency. Repairs holes and cracks on a variety of surfaces. Applies coating materials to a variety of surfaces, or applies and finishes plaster surfaces in the construction and repair of interior walls and ceilings and stucco exterior walls. Prepares and sizes walls, cuts trim, wallpaper and/or vinyl. Damp proofs exterior brick and masonry walls. Tapes and spackles drywall constructions when required. Equipment Inventory and Operations: Receives, stores, and handles supplies, materials, and equipment. Routes and expedites movement of parts, supplies and materials to production area and repair sites. Receives, stores, signs out and checks tools, equipment, shop supplies and repair parts used by installation and maintenance shop workers and mechanics. May be required to drive a 2 ½ ton truck on and off station. Installations - Assists the journeyman with: Installation of drapery hardware and hangs drapes to assure proper functioning and coverage. Installs and removes various types of dispenser's (i.e., soap, towel, glove boxes, sharps containers, etc.), receptacles and other wall hung equipment and furnishings. Moves furniture as part of installation or set-up activities, and performs the various tasks of a maintenance worker. Assists in installing signs, warning devices on walls, posts and other surfaces and structures throughout the facility; performs individual work orders to install specific furniture items, performs specific modifications on existing modular furniture, repairs furniture and furnishings displaying mechanical damage or malfunction, and checks the safety and proper functioning of all furnishings. Performs specific modifications on existing modular furniture. Laborer - Assist with grounds maintenance duties: Performs digging work related to such tasks as planting of trees and shrubs, laying of plumbing systems and building sidewalks. Breaks up hard surfaces utilizing a jackhammer or necessary tools. Mows yards using power mowers; and cuts trees using chainsaws and axes. Loads and unloads supplies and equipment. Rakes leaves, picks up trash, washes vehicles, pulls weeds, waters grass, shovels snow, and cleans up work areas. Operates heavy hand power equipment such as jackhammers, chainsaws, and power mowers, and cleans and adjusts belts on power equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
