The data scientist is a member of the Data and Analytics Information Technology team, having a critical role in supporting the BHE (Berkshire Hathaway Energy) business transformations and asset performance management initiatives. The data scientist assists BHE business groups in translating business problems into technical and data requirements and participates in other Data and Analytics center of excellence initiatives. This position works with information technology teams across the company to extract, transform, validate and load data into data lake and analytics software systems including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Power BI. This individual contributes to model development, model testing, production support, data validation and data integrity efforts in the course of daily work.

Responsibilities
For Sr Data Scientist role:
- Mentor a team of data scientists, providing guidance, technical expertise, and support to ensure the successful execution of projects. Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.
- Significant experience in Team management, Project Planning & Management, Stakeholder Management
- Oversee, in conjunction with Product Owners, end-to-end data science projects, from problem definition and data exploration to model development, validation, and deployment
- Apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to analyze complex datasets, extract meaningful patterns, and develop predictive and prescriptive models.
- Contribute to the development of the company's data strategy by identifying opportunities to leverage data science to enhance business processes, optimize operations, and drive revenue growth.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders from various departments within the company, including Performance Engineering, Asset Performance, and T & D to understand their data needs and deliver solutions to meet business objectives.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and GenAI technologies. Evaluate and implement new tools, algorithms, and frameworks to enhance the team's capabilities.
- Ensure the team creates and maintains documentation using appropriate tools, including wikis for narrative documentation and version-controlled repositories for technical documentation.
- Operate in agile environment intended to facilitate iterative development and continuous delivery.
- Effectively communicate with colleagues on both technical and non-technical topics, across a variety of communications platforms, including voice and video calls, chat, and email
- Serves as a primary contributor to BHE data and analytics initiatives and projects in an analytics model development role by defining and clarifying technical project scope, developing technical approach to modeling and analytics. Responsible for design and development of data and model pipelines.
- Participates in data discovery activities for complex source systems and collaborates with Data Engineering to extract, transform, and load data into data lake for analytics. Responsible for developing and deploying machine learning model pipelines.
- Communicates priorities, requirements and operational impacts and aligns with manager expectations with affiliate stakeholders in projects and department activities.
- Maintains daily administration of data lake and machine learning production environments, including scheduling processes, monitoring compute resources, and performing administrative functions.
- Documents technical and data requirements gathering and extract, transform, load (ETL) working with IT teams to identify source system tables and fields that need to be brought into the data lake and analytics tools; collaborates with relevant business experts to validate data and system deliverables.
- Designs and develops advanced analytics models in collaboration with business groups to solve problems and meet project requirements. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver key insights supporting transformation initiatives.
- Collaborates with vendor(s) and internal teams to identify and propose data science solutions for various product initiatives.
- Contribute to organization-wide model for modernization and evangelization of data science. Provide expert consultative assistance to other affiliates teams in the company, including data scientists working in other areas of digital transformation. Contribute to technical vision of data science Center of Excellence.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, software engineering or a related technical field. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.) Masters in data science or related technical field preferred. Eighteen months of work and/or intern experience primarily in a data science, modeling and administration role. Two years of related work experience, primarily in a data science, modeling and administration role is required for the data scientist 2 level. Five years of related work experience, primarily in a data science, modeling and administration role is required for the senior data scientist level. Experience with data analytics and/or process mining technologies is a plus. Experience with SQL and NOSQL, data extract, transform and load (ETL) processes. Demonstrated basic knowledge and experience working with any one of the following is required: Python, R, VenSim, Extend, Arena, Celonis, SSAS, SPSS, MATLAB, SAS/STAT or other advanced operations modeling software related to data science, business intelligence and analytics. Capabilities in more than one area are a plus. Preferred skills in Cloudera, Kafka, Spark, Hive, Pig, Cloudera, Sqoop, Azure DevOps. Experience participating in transformation projects and managing a variety of organizational stakeholders and goals. Strong project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects concurrently. Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to appropriately monitor and manage solutions and data throughout BHE. Demonstrated ability to understand and utilize computer systems and applications. Strong personal computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office. Familiarity with virtual collaboration tools (Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, M365, One Drive, etc.) Experience in process improvement methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean, or other formalized improvement methodologies) is a plus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to work with both internal and external stakeholders at various levels throughout the organization. Strong leadership skills, effective interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
