Civic Engagement Community Organizer

Interested applicants should be looking to:

  • Work on a small dynamic team to organize and attract voters to a series of vibrant and deeply engaging town hall meetings across Philadelphia that center non-carceral community safety measures such as mobile crisis teams;
  • Grow their skills in community and relational organizing and leadership development;
  • Help mobilize community members to vote defensively in an important election year; and
  • Be available to work some nights and weekends.

Civic Engagement Community Organizer Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop a strategy for a series of town hall meetings across the city of Philadelphia in collaboration with AMP Executive Director, Organizing Director and Movement Director (leadership team)
  • Conduct meaningful and inquisitive outreach in the community that engages community members where they are at and works to get them to local town hall meetings where we can have deeper conversations relating to our campaigns around mobile crisis response and getting the community the resources it needs to thrive 
  • Train and develop volunteer leaders from our base who can assist with outreach and engagement at town hall meetings.
  • Work in collaboration with movement partners who will be organizing mutual aid food distribution and electoral door to door canvassing to help get town hall participants to their events and vice versa. 

Qualifications:

A successful community organizer should have

  • Solid political acumen, be a team player and thrive in an ever-changing electoral environment
  • Experience managing volunteers
  • Experience training volunteers and/or executing plans
  • Ability to multitask, create and achieve goals, meet deadlines and creatively solve problems
  • Strong willingness to learn and adapt
  • Ability to take feedback and implement changes in real time
  • Good listening skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment that may include long hours, nights, and weekends
  • Ability to work independently and to set and keep your own hours
  • Ideological compatibility with Amistad Movement Power’s analysis that social problems in United States society are mostly rooted in structural racism, patriarchy and the capitalist economic system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a community, labor or electoral organizer
  • Deep personal ties to one or more Philadelphia neighborhoods
