Join a dynamic and expanding University Facilities Design and Construction Department as we seek an innovative and detail-oriented Electrical Engineer to be an integral part of our thriving internal design team. Collaborate daily with like-minded professionals to shape the safe, efficient, and sustainable design of multiple concurrent major construction projects. Be a key contributor to advancing the University's mission as a top public research institution.
In this role, you'll report directly to the Assistant Director of Design while also receiving assignments from the Director of Design and Construction. Enjoy a high degree of independence, where you'll make impactful decisions and take actions aligned with the department's operations, guided by mutually established priorities and objectives with the Director. Demonstrate your expertise through considerable independent judgment and initiative, offering economic alternatives while adhering to established budgets.
Working here comes with benefits that exceed salary alone. There are personal rewards including comprehensive health and retirement plan options. We also focus on creating and sustaining a healthy mix of work, personal and academic pursuit - all in an effort to support your work-life effectiveness.
Responsibilities
- Prepare contract documents including drawings and specifications for construction.
- Personally visit project site to analyze existing conditions and update record drawings to reflect the spaces, systems, and equipment in their current configuration before the start of renovation design work.
- Design various aspects of electrical systems for campus buildings in a standard electronic format (i.e. AutoCAD, REVIT, lighting and energy use modeling software, etc.). Designs will include, but not be limited to, work on secondary distribution systems for equipment power, lighting systems, and low voltage control systems in compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and requirements.
- Coordinate electrical design with the work of the entire design team to ensure a cohesive set of construction documents, which accommodates interrelated systems, layouts, and equipment.
- Where applicable: Utilize personal, valid New York State professional engineering license to legally stamp and sign final contract documents which are deemed clear, concise, and complete via QA/QC process.
- Contribute to the early and complete definition of the electrical scope of project work; Resolve difficult problems that require a combination of investigation, research, and analysis.
- Actively collaborate with cost estimators to ensure that accurate cost estimates are generated based on the full scope of electrical work as known at each phase milestone.
- Resolve complex and difficult project problems when facts and information for a resolution may not be available, or strong differing opinions need to be aligned for progress to continue.
- Collaborate with project delivery teams during construction to address design changes, clarifications, additional information requests, submittals and shop drawings in timely manner to resolve issues in the field.
- Participate in the "turnover" process of ensuring operational staff are trained on how to maintain systems as designed; Provide access to O&M information as part of the project documentation.
- May supervise junior staff and contribute to the growth and development of direct reports; May review, sign and personally stamp staff-prepared drawings for construction.
- Collaborate with external design consultants hired to prepare contract documents.
- Serve as a design stakeholder on project work to provide professional input on existing conditions, University standards, coordination with other projects, etc. This function includes verification that compatible electrical equipment is selected and that power services proposed are adequate to support the electrical requirements of the program or facility.
- Investigate building record information, available electrical services, program requirements, and any preliminary design for use by external design consultants.
- Assist in the coordination of the construction process, which includes new construction, renovations, and system modifications.
- Shares in setting work priorities and objectives according to established polices and procedures.
- Serve as a peer reviewer of electrical engineering scope in ongoing design reviews.
- Actively participate as part of a peer review team to offer feedback on in-house design progress sets at the milestone reviews of concept/30/60/90% and bid documents. Clearly communicate questions and comments in a timely manner for incorporation in the project progression.
- Actively participate as part of a peer review team to offer feedback on design progress sets generated by outside consultants at the milestone reviews of concept/30/60/90% and bid documents, regardless of AHJ issuing building permits, etc. Clearly communicate questions and comments in a timely manner for incorporation in the project progression.
- Regularly communicates and interacts with internal and external constituents to coordinate design work and resolve complex challenges.
- Assist in the troubleshooting of existing electrical systems to formulate a recommendation for repair, reprogramming, and/or replacement as necessary to maintain the daily operations of the University.
- Interface with outside agencies including SUCF, SUNY OCF, NYS Division of Standards and Codes, National Grid, NYPA, NYSERDA, and others as needed to coordinate work and stay informed of program opportunities and upcoming changes that may impact the University's facilities.
- Serve on selection committees as necessary for staff hiring, consultant selection, term contract procurement, etc. to ensure high performing partners for electrical design needs.
- Collaborate with the Office of Sustainability to electrify the campus as one of the University's ICE CAP goals and continuously improve on energy efficiency.
- Work with the University's Code Compliance Manager to ensure adherence to all applicable building codes and federal laws.
- Maintain working knowledge and familiarity with electrical requirements including NYS building codes; NFPA 70, 70E, 72, 101; ASHRAE 90.1; IES lighting standards and control systems including DALI 0-10V and wireless Zigbee systems.

- Collaborate with other departments within University Facilities to coordinate amongst projects including capital, rehab, University initiatives, and more to ensure minimal impact to University operations and effective use of resources.
- Cultivate team effort/opportunities/successes and staff reciprocity to deter an individual, zero-sum culture.
- Integrate a total cost of ownership (TOC) approach to project management from start to finish.
- Actively participate in the documentation and update of design standards for the University.
- Coordinate with University campus partners including sustainability, CIT, procurement, academic units, events, communication, EDI, and others to ensure a seamless delivery based on client needs within University standards.
