Job Title: University Facilities Electrical Engineer

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled University Facilities Electrical Engineer to join our team at JK Executive Strategies LLC. As an Electrical Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the safe, efficient, and sustainable design of multiple concurrent major construction projects on campus. You will collaborate daily with like-minded professionals to develop innovative electrical systems solutions.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Prepare contract documents, including drawings and specifications for construction, to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Personally visit project sites to analyze existing conditions and update record drawings to reflect current configurations before starting renovation design work.
  • Design various aspects of electrical systems for campus buildings in a standard electronic format, including secondary distribution systems, lighting systems, and low-voltage control systems.
  • Coordinate electrical design with the entire design team to ensure a cohesive set of construction documents that accommodates interrelated systems, layouts, and equipment.
  • Utilize personal, valid New York State professional engineering license to stamp and sign final contract documents after QA/QC process.
  • Contribute to the early and complete definition of the electrical scope of project work, resolving difficult problems that require investigation, research, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with cost estimators to ensure accurate cost estimates based on the full scope of electrical work at each phase milestone.
  • Resolve complex project problems, even when facts and information for a resolution may not be available or strong differing opinions need to be aligned for progress to continue.
  • Collaborate with project delivery teams during construction to address design changes, clarifications, additional information requests, submittals, and shop drawings in a timely manner to resolve issues in the field.
  • Participate in the "turnover" process to ensure operational staff are trained on maintaining systems as designed, providing access to O&M information as part of project documentation.
  • May supervise junior staff and contribute to the growth and development of direct reports, reviewing, signing, and personally stamping staff-prepared drawings for construction.
  • Collaborate with external design consultants hired to prepare contract documents.
  • Serve as a design stakeholder on project work to provide professional input on existing conditions, University standards, coordination with other projects, and verification of compatible electrical equipment selection and adequate power services.
  • Investigate building record information, available electrical services, program requirements, and preliminary design for use by external design consultants.
  • Assist in coordinating the construction process, including new construction, renovations, and system modifications.
  • Share in setting work priorities and objectives according to established policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a peer reviewer of electrical engineering scope in ongoing design reviews.
  • Actively participate as part of a peer review team to offer feedback on in-house design progress sets at milestone reviews of concept/30/60/90% and bid documents, clearly communicating questions and comments for incorporation in project progression.
  • Regularly communicate and interact with internal and external constituents to coordinate design work and resolve complex challenges.
  • Assist in troubleshooting existing electrical systems to formulate recommendations for repair, reprogramming, and/or replacement as necessary to maintain daily operations.
  • Interface with outside agencies, including SUCF, SUNY OCF, NYS Division of Standards and Codes, National Grid, NYPA, NYSERDA, and others as needed to coordinate work and stay informed of program opportunities and upcoming changes that may impact the University's facilities.
  • Serve on selection committees as necessary for staff hiring, consultant selection, term contract procurement, etc. to ensure high-performing partners for electrical design needs.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Sustainability to electrify the campus as one of UB's ICE CAP goals and continuously improve energy efficiency.
  • Work with UB's Code Compliance Manager to ensure adherence to all applicable building codes and federal laws.
  • Maintain working knowledge and familiarity with electrical requirements, including NYS building codes, NFPA 70, 70E, 72, 101, ASHRAE 90.1, IES lighting standards, and control systems, including DALI 0-10V and wireless Zigbee systems.
  • Maintain working knowledge and familiarity with electrical scope, including spot networks, design of power distribution systems, grounding, and ground fault coordination, coordination of telephone, data systems, audio/visual systems, fire alarm and security systems, design of low-voltage systems, medium-voltage power distribution, emergency generators, and automatic transfer switches (ATSs).
  • Collaborate with other departments within University Facilities to coordinate amongst projects, including capital, rehab, University initiatives, and more, to ensure minimal impact to University operations and effective use of resources.
  • Cultivate team effort, opportunities, successes, and staff reciprocity to deter an individual, zero-sum culture.
  • Integrate a total cost of ownership (TOC) approach to project management from start to finish.
  • Actively participate in the documentation and update of design standards for the University.
  • Coordinate with University campus partners, including sustainability, CIT, procurement, academic units, events, communication, EDI, and others to ensure seamless delivery based on client needs within University standards.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related degree with 3 years of experience in a design role.
  • New York State registration as a professional electrical engineer.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the degree.
  • Excellent technical, organizational, and interpersonal skills required.

Salary Range: $98K-$123K (Yearly)
