Job Title - School Bus Trainer

Supervisor(s): Director of Operations for Transportation

Job Goals:
  • To provide initial and ongoing training for potential and existing school bus drivers

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical as required by Board policy.
  3. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (BDL) and commercial driver's license (CDL) with P/S endorsements.
  4. Minimum of two years school bus driving experience.
  5. Currently possess and maintain ALEA School Bus Trainer Certification.
  6. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  7. Possess and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record including the ability to remain insurable under school system insurance requirements.
  8. Competent written and verbal communication skills.
  9. Physical strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighting up to 50 pounds.
  10. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
  11. Ability, agility and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting, or standing, stopping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching.
  12. Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather.
  13. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  14. Such alternative qualifications as listed as the Board may require.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system, its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Coordinates, plans, and implements training programs for basic school bus driving courses.
  3. Assists with the planning and delivery of in-service programsforschool bus drivers and aides.
  4. Trains and assists drivers with student behavior management techniques and other job specific issues.
  5. Drives buses and transports students, as needed.
  6. Prepares and maintains a variety of bus driver records.
  7. Maintains records and statistical information regarding school bus drivers to determine training needs.
  8. Maintain a working knowledge of safe driving practices and methods.
  9. Implements diverse methods and techniques for training school bus drivers and aides.
  10. Remains current in the area of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for school bus drivers.
  11. Properly uses and maintains responsibility for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system.
  12. Request supplies and equipment needed to carry out duties and assigned projects.
  13. Engages in work related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and/or for advancement.
  14. Performs duties in a courteous, professional manner.
  15. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matter.
  16. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  17. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  18. Responds to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner.
  19. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  20. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  21. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  22. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
