Senior Software Engineer - Backend
Role Summary
- This role creates technology solutions for large-scale data management and analysis for connected vehicles. The ideal applicant will have experience in networked systems including hands-on work using industry-leading cloud environments.
- The position will be responsible for evaluating and creating cutting edge software and distributed computing infrastructure to support a range of application uses, ranging from machine learning for autonomous functions to fleet-data analysis empowering better mobility experiences for our customers.
Role Responsibilities
- Design and implement key components for highly scalable, distributed data collection and analysis system built for handling petabytes of data in the cloud.
- Analyze and support requirements from machine learning specialists, focusing on the most important topics in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
- Key contributor to technical portion of the product road map, balancing the application of state-of-the-art development approaches with the need for robustness and scalability.
- Move architecture and implementation through the automotive development pipeline, from research to deployment in millions of cars on the road.
- Work with engineers from other divisions contributing to this analytics system, contributing to best practices in backend infrastructure and distributed computing topics.
- Give feedback to other engineers on design and implementation, with an eye toward enhancing common practices and automotive-grade robustness.
End Products (What does this role produce?)
- Cloud-based software components contributing to an overall production-ready distributed computing application.
- Define and implement an architecture focused on scalability, robustness, performance, and portability.
- End-to-end development process, including feature design proposal, feature implementation, unit/functional/integration tests, and deployment plan.
- Technical specifications, system-level architecture and documentation for transfer to VW Group series development
Performance Metrics (How is the role measured?)
- Creativity in generating and demonstrating new technology concepts for VW Group systems
- Successful transfer of technology concepts into production systems
- Delivery on self- and team-determined agile development goals
Years of Relevant Experience:
- Minimum years of experience needed: 7-10 years
Education
Required: B.S. in Computer Science (or equivalent education)
Desired: Master's or PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent education)
Skills:

Required Skillset
- Ability to own large subsystems and their interactions with the overall system, applying best-practices from design through to deployment and maintenance.
- Hands-on, cloud-based distributed computing development experience, including awareness of key scalability and parallelization approaches in production environments.
- Familiarity with AWS development and foundational services (S3, EC2, SQS, DynamoDB) as well as compute services (Lambda, Batch, Step).
- Familiarity with devops technologies including Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, and Ansible.
- Fluency in Java and related OOP paradigms and design patterns.
- Effectiveness with key development tools such as git, and familiarity with collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence or similar tools.
Desired Skills
- Experience with key distributed computing technologies like Scala and Akka.
- An ability to periodically deploy systems to cloud environments such as AWS.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud computing environment.
- Experience or understanding of developing machine/deep learning systems in a distributed environment.
- Conventional backend development experience with Java and common frameworks (Spring, Play).
- Modern development practice experience - e.g. Agile SCRUM, DevOps, SDLC
- German language skills
