Job Summary

This position is responsible to provide basic life support at the scene of an accident or illness and during transport under the direction of the Paramedic and MH Emergency Services (EMS) protocols as approved by the EMS medical director and/or online medical control. This position can also provide basic life support care at the hospital under the direction of the Registered Nurse or provider. This position is diverse, multifaceted and serves a broad spectrum of age groups. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Current certification as a Certified Emergency Medical Technician by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Emergency Medical Service Commission.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and a minimum of three years of satisfactory driving performance.
  • Current CPR certification.

  • One year healthcare experience
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
  • Knowledge of healthcare policies, and governmental regulations, pertinent to Ambulance Department.
  • Sufficient knowledge to observe and report changes in patient condition.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, Hospital Administrators, providers, consultants, business associates and regulatory agencies presenting a professional image as a representative of Marion General Hospital.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Seek consultation/collaboration for complex issues or when unsure, utilizing resources that are available
  • Problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.
  • Developed computer skills and the ability to learn and proficiently perform patient care applications, echarting, email and other standard applications related to the department operations and job function.
  • Strong customer service skills, with special emphasis on patient centered care.
  • Ability to manage multiple issues simultaneously and appropriately prioritize based on patient needs.
  • Basic working understanding of concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self and others.
  • Ability to react appropriately in any environment or situation.
  • General awareness and understanding of legal implication of patient care activities and self-performance while performing job duties.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
Working Conditions
  • Typical emergency management clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
  • Work may be subject to interruptions.
  • Exposure to potentially violent situations.
  • Risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
  • Exposure to inclement weather conditions and hazardous traffic conditions.
  • Works with protected health information.
  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment
  • Standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, climbing, pushing and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize patient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Use of computer and other standard office equipment.
  • Uses patient care tools and equipment as they relate to area of emergency medicine.
  • Ability to handle highly emotional and highly stressful situations.
