Journeyman Mechanic

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Journeyman Mechanic performs service, repair, and installation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and steam utility systems, electronic, refrigeration, restaurant equipment, controls, (HVAC and humidity control in 18th century original and reconstruction buildings as well as 19th - 21st century buildings. Monitors mechanical systems for unusual operations and initiates correct actions. Trains other mechanics. Demonstrates safe work practices in all trade related work assignments. Assures compliance with appropriate safety policies and procedures with applicable Federal, State and Local codes, regulations and requirements.

WORK TO BE PERFORMED:
  1. Provides on-the-job training for other mechanics while performing service, repair and installation of mechanical and electrical equipment (e.g.: chillers, boilers, solar water heating systems, heat recovery units, air conditions, sump pumps, electrical motors, toilets, etc.).
  2. Services and repairs sensors and controls installed in buildings to operate Building an Energy Management Systems. Replaces and conducts new installation of electrical services and building/system wiring.
  3. Repairs, replaces and conducts new installation of electrical services and building/system wiring meeting current building codes and safety standards.
  4. Performs preventative maintenance scheduled task for all types of mechanical and electrical equipment ensuring safe and proper operations.
  5. Adheres to safety regulations and polices. Has the ability to identify and communicate effectively any safety issues related to mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems.
  6. Participates in on the job training from experience mechanics.
  7. Oversee and assist all contractor work to ensure all work is performed in a safe and appropriate manner to protect Colonial Williamsburg's assets and properties.
  8. Work directly with contractors when necessary to complete any and all required tasks to ensure they are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  9. May provide "on call" coverage 24 hours a day.
  10. This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends or shift work as required by Foreman, Mechanical Trades.
  11. This position is deemed essential personal and is required to report whether the foundation is closed or not, regardless of the emergency, weather related or otherwise.
  12. Performs any other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, plus application of mechanical and electrical skills related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and controls.
  • Ability to read and explain mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans, shop drawings, catalogue cuts, and similar material that support quality performance of work assignment.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D certificate required. Completion of a minimum of 4 years' experience in application of HVAC and control, or a minimum of 4 years' experience directly related to the preservation of historic buildings, restaurant facilities, repair and operation of mechanical systems in hospitals, museums, building serviced by computer-controlled systems, or other temperature and humidity-controlled environments.
  • Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license and have an acceptable driving record based on The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's criteria.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds, ability to work at heights above 30 feet on ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to work and shift, including nights, weekends, holiday and emergency calls.
  • All licensed mechanics must maintain current/valid Virginia State Licenses meeting all required and periodic renewals.
  • The following licenses are inclusive: Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC Mechanical, Gasfitter-Natural/LP and Back Flow Certification. Employee will be required to participate as needed/requested regarding the departments monthly in-house Safety Program.
