Position Overview

As the Lead Mechanical Engineer for central plant design, you will lead the design and implementation of central plant and thermal distribution projects, specifically campus-scale steam and chiller plants. You will be responsible for utilizing your expertise in steam and chiller plant systems to develop, design, and optimize these facilities and other projects, ensuring they meet the unique needs and standards of our clients, which include government, higher education, and healthcare organizations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, project management, and innovative design methodologies.

Location: Arlington, VA with travel to client and project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Central Plant and Critical Infrastructure Design: Lead and oversee the design and integration of steam and chiller central plant systems, including both central plant equipment and distribution piping within the plant and across campus-wide networks. This role encompasses the design and coordination of critical infrastructure systems essential to building operations, ensuring reliability, scalability, and efficiency. Projects range from renovating existing central plant facilities to designing new, state-of-the-art central plants and infrastructure for critical healthcare, higher education, and government projects. Responsibilities include conducting heat and mass balance analyses, optimizing energy efficiency, selecting appropriate equipment, and sizing piping and ductwork to meet project and operational requirements.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Provide in-depth knowledge and technical leadership on central plant systems, including components, performance optimization, and maintenance best practices. Our ideal candidate will have experience with utility master planning, life cycle cost analysis, energy modeling and hydraulic calculations.
  • Client Collaboration: Work closely with clients to understand their specific needs and requirements. Develop custom central plant and infrastructure solutions that enhance energy efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness while meeting regulations.
  • Technical Documentation: Lead the development of technical documentation, including system specifications, technical reports and narratives, and construction documents.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough quality assurance reviews and evaluations of both your work and the work the broader team to ensure the systems designed will perform efficiently, safely, and reliably, while also meeting client requirements.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on the latest advancements in central plant technology and healthcare industry regulations. Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance system performance and energy efficiency.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, architects, and project managers to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Travel as needed for on-site collaboration, project assessments, and presentations.
  • Opportunity Development & Client Engagement: Participate in interviews and presentations to support new business opportunities and strengthen client relationships.
Qualifications
  • Experience: A minimum of 10 years of mechanical design experience in an architecture or MEP engineering firm, including at least 5 years leading design efforts for central plant systems, is required. Candidates must have proven expertise in the design of healthcare, higher education, and/or government projects, with a specialization in central plant and critical infrastructure systems. Strong collaboration skills are essential, with the ability to work closely with clients and project teams to deliver innovative and efficient solutions. Experience creating technical proposals and supporting project interviews is a plus. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate leadership capabilities, including mentoring junior engineers and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams to achieve project goals.
  • Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in Architectural Engineering or Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Licensure: PE license required, with the ability to pursue additional state licenses as needed.
  • Technical Skills: Skilled with using cloud based and mobile technology for collaboration. Proficiency in Revit and other relevant design software.
  • Attributes: Exceptional communication and listening skills, capable of managing multiple assignments simultaneously. Strong leadership and organizational abilities, along with a commitment to actively engage and contribute to our company culture.
