GENERAL SUMMARY:

Plan, organize, and direct departmental activities. Develop and monitor budgets, quality improvement activities, staffing levels, goals, objectives and policies in conjunction with the Medical Director, the operational and personnel activities of the Respiratory Care Services Department to provide services of the highest quality.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains current knowledge and practice that address the care needs of the neonate (birth to 6 weeks), infant (6 weeks to 1 year), pediatric (1 year to 12 years), adolescent (12-18 years), early adult (19-45 years), middle adult (45-60 years), late adult (61-79 years), and geriatric (80+ years) care needs.

  • Plan, organize and direct departmental activities in accordance with regulatory and accrediting organizations.

  • Hire, train, direct, evaluate and when necessary, discipline or discharge departmental employees.

  • Develop operating, manpower and capital equipment budgets; monitor departmental performance to established budgetary goals.

  • Develop short and long-term departmental goals and objectives and monitor achievement.

  • Authorize personnel actions and purchase of departmental equipment and supplies.

  • Ensure compliance with standards established by accrediting and regulatory agencies. Direct, develop, implement and evaluate departmental quality assurance programs.

  • Conduct departmental meetings and in-service training for technical and student support staff.

  • Perform duties of technical staff to maintain department schedule or as need arises during routinely schedule hours.

  • Participate on various Hospital and Corporate committees to represent the department and Hospital.

  • Promote the Quality Initiative.

  • Maintain and enhance professional expertise through appropriate educational and organizational activities.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervision Exercised :

  • Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over designated supervisory, technical, and secretarial support staff.

Personal Interaction:

  • Daily contacts are made with department managers to discuss patient treatments.

  • Weekly contacts are made with physicians to review patient therapy and recommend any changes.

  • Monthly contacts are made with administrative staff to discuss departmental activities; employees to discuss patient care and home discharge planning; patients and families to discuss therapy and treatments; the general public (e.g., sales representatives) to receive information on products and discuss patient home care supplies.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• Must hold at least an Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited

Respiratory Therapy program, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Allied Health, Health Administration, Public Health, Business or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

• Three to four (3-4) years of progressively more responsible experience in respiratory therapy and supervision.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Registration as a Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

  • Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities, standards and behaviors as outlined in the HFHS’ Customer Service Policy

  • Must practice the customer skills as provided through on-going training and in-services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS :

Normal office environment with minimal exposure to noise, dust, or extreme temperatures.
