The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails and parkways.

DCR is looking for qualified applicants for a seasonal Boat Ramp Monitor position at Pequot Pond in Westfield. This position requires an eight hour work day, five days a week including every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and including Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. The monitor educator will be stationed at the lake boat ramp and will report to DCR Lakes and Ponds Program staff.

As part of the Commonwealth's effort to control the spread of non-native aquatic invasive species (AIS) in our lakes and ponds, the educator will perform voluntary inspections on boats, trailers, and gear. Ramp monitors will look for, and remove, any hitchhiking plants or animals and will distribute educational materials to boaters. In addition, boat ramp monitors will conduct a brief survey of boaters that use the facilities. Occasionally the educator may be requested to visit nearby boat ramps, or work an additional day, if a fishing derby or other high-use event is scheduled at that facility. Boat ramp monitors may also be offered the opportunity to participate in additional DCR Lakes and Ponds AIS programs.

Specific Duties:
-Prior to starting work, the Educators must participate in training conducted by the DCR Lakes and Ponds staff on the identification of invasive aquatic species and the procedure for conducting boat inspections and surveys.
-Conduct voluntary boat inspections for aquatic plants or animals attached to the boats/trailers/gear. Boat inspections will be conducted only on the boats of individuals that have agreed to participate and will be limited to the external portions of the boat and trailer. Boat ramp monitors may ask boaters if they are willing to empty bait buckets, live-wells and cooling water on dry land away from shore.
-Distribute educational materials including but not limited to materials on aquatic invasive species, boater safety and boat decontamination. Provide information regarding boat inspections and boat washing to boaters who agree to participate in the program.
-Conduct a brief survey of boater's awareness of invasive aquatic species and their spread.

-As time permits, work on specific water quality issues that will be identified by Lakes and Ponds Program staff.

Preferred Qualifications
-Demonstrated ability to organize and carry out basic data sampling and management.

Use of electronic tablet to collect data
-Knowledge of a second language (Spanish, etc.) is highly desirable but not required.

Qualifications:
First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: None.

Special Requirements:

I. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

II. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Standard First Aid and Personal Safety Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
