Job Summary The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Michigan - Flint is seeking to hire an Academic Advisor Sr. Reporting to the Dean of the College, the CAS Academic Advisor Sr. plays a crucial role in advancing the college's retention and degree completion objectives. Please note, this is an internal search limited to current UM-Flint College of Arts and Science staff. Responsibilities* Student Interaction Initiate, and continues to provide, regular communication with newly admitted and continuing students to provide comprehensive and holistic academic advising including strategies that promote and sustain persistence. Utilize confidential information and conduct confidential conversations to provide these services. Counsel students experiencing academic and/or financial difficulties, including those on academic and/or financial aid probation. Advise students on course selection, graduation requirements, co-curricular opportunities, and student rights/responsibilities. Work with students to create, monitor, assess, and update student's academic course schedules and academic graduation plans. Accepts referrals from the campus community regarding student needs and issues and contacts students for advising meetings. Assess student needs and refers students to appropriate university resources as warranted, and follows-up on those referrals including financial aid, tutorial support, writing support, psychological services, accessibility services, and career services. Planning and Assessment In coordination with faculty of assigned department(s), uses technology and data management to assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of retention and student outreach programs dedicated to student academic success including those rooted in early academic warning, predictive modeling, and developmental academic advising which considers students academic, personal, social, and professional success. Contribute to the development of short- and long-term plans for the unit/department(s). Maintain relationships with academic and student affairs offices to ensure that students and faculty advisors are aware of resources, workshops, and support systems on campus. Perform related administrative duties as assigned. Recruitment Engage in prospective student recruitment for the College and maintains liaison with all departments and individuals involved in the admissions process. Develop public presentations designed to promote the College. Coordinate Coordinates and participates in early academic intervention activities and academic standards review committees, including taking or recommending appropriate actions, interventions, and student advising. May oversee the coordination of the faculty advising program in collaboration with the academic departments, which may include the assignment of students to faculty advisors, development of new advising programs and procedures, and the planning and execution of training sessions for new faculty advisors. Required Qualifications* Must be a current UM-Flint College of Arts and Science staff member. Bachelor's degree in a related field (such as Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Student Affairs) Three or more years of work experience as an academic advisor/counselor or other related experience.
