Job Summary
The Director of Philanthropy will develop and advance a culture of giving by growing new and existing funding streams through new donor development, major gifts, grants, events, and capacity building campaigns. A key initiative for this role will be to build, diversify, and grow
Share ’s donor base. To do this successfully, the Director of Philanthropy must effectively communicate and present the mission and values of
Shar e and our programs to potential funders and the community.
This position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that will grow philanthropic revenue and advance partnerships with individuals, corporations, and donors.
The Director of Philanthropy will be responsible for achieving
Share ’s annual fundraising goals ($1.8M in FY24), as well as developing and executing a long-term fundraising growth plan to exceed $3M+ in the next several years. This aggressive and attainable fundraising goal will be achieved through effective communication, both written and spoken, face-to-face meetings, and planned events and activities with current and prospective donors relating and energizing everyone with our goals and objectives, staying focused on the mission and the work we do.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Alongside the senior leadership team, set a five-year vision for the program with realistic targets for multi-year growth of private revenue that aligns with the organization's ambitious needs
Build and maintain a portfolio of major gift donors
Grow philanthropic relationships with high-net-worth individual and institutional prospects
Engage senior leadership team and board members in key donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities
Develop and execute strategies and tactics to expand outreach and engagement of major institutional funders who align with our
Share 's mission, vision, and values
Develop a comprehensive plan to increase annual giving through community engagement
Develop highly competitive funding proposals for government, foundation, and corporate entities that present a compelling case for support
Oversee the grant funding function, including maintaining a pipeline of grant opportunities, grant proposals, and ensuring timely submission and reporting.
With the development team, execute major fundraising events and capacity building campaigns
Nurture a culture of philanthropy by advancing partnerships with corporate, foundation, and donors
Join local and regional philanthropic organizations to promote and advocate for funding and gifts advancing
Share ’s mission, vision, and values
Mentor a team of development professionals, and participate in executive level planning with the senior leadership team
Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated fundraising experience including donor prospecting, stewardship, annual giving, and major gift solicitation
Proven ability to solicit and close major gifts and manage multiple priorities
Understanding of sales strategies and donor cultivation
Ability to establish, maintain, grow, and inspire donors, prospects, volunteers, development staff, and other constituents toward the accomplishment of fundraising goals
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences to capture their interest in our organization
A decisive and resourceful individual with the willingness to accept responsibility and take charge of results; able to work successfully with limited resources
Minimum Qualifications
Sense of professionalism, confidentiality, independent judgment, and an exceptional work ethic
Five years of progressively responsible non-profit fundraising experience
Five years of experience in progressively responsible leadership roles
Expertise within the industry highly favored
Highly organized, attentive to detail, and able to anticipate, plan for, and meet and exceed deadlines
Knowledge of and ability to oversee tracking and reporting systems, including grant stewardship, fundraising and donor management software
Proven leader and has a track record in developing and executing strategies that achieve organizational goals
Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and financial resources
The usual and customary methods of performing the job functions require the following physical demands: driving to and from development meetings, the ability to be on the phone for long periods of time, and extensive computer time in communication, research, and organization. The job is performed regularly at
Share ’s administrative office, with limited remote work availability.
Specific Accountabilities
Fundraising
– Develop and execute comprehensive strategy for achieving
Share ’s annual fundraising goal. Prioritize activities and relationships for the development team in support of these goals. This includes annual giving programs, major gift campaigns, planned giving, special events, and corporate sponsorships. Oversees the creation of campaign themes, messaging, and timelines, ensuring each initiative is tailored to engage the target audience effectively.
Monitor and evaluate fundraising efforts
– Analyzing data, preparing reports, and adjusting strategies as needed to ensure targets are met. Regularly update senior leadership and board on fundraising performance, challenges, and successes, and use insights gained to inform future planning.
Donor
engagement and stewardship – Engage and cultivate relationships with donors at all levels. Interacts with major donors, providing them with regular updates on the impact of their contributions and ensuring they feel valued and connected to the organization.
Budget
management – Effectively manage budget of the development team, and fundraising plans. Oversee the budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and expenses are kept within approved limits. This includes financial forecasts, approving expenditures, and ensuring a high return on investment for fundraising activities.
Public
relations – Oversee the communications plan and strategy to increase visibility and awareness of Share’s programs. Along with senior leadership, serves as a spokesperson for the organization. Creates and maintains a favorable public image, assuring that the programs are known to the community, including production of collateral such as; social media, quarterly newsletters, Annual Impact Report, and other printed and digital publications/ resources.
Other duties as assigned
– The position is also responsible for representing
Share
at various meetings and events centered around homelessness and services for
Share ’s clients; keeping current with laws and regulations that impact the operation of
Share
programs; as well as a wide variety of management and administrative duties necessary for the efficient operation of the organization and its programs.
