INTERN - ALCOHOL and DRUG COUNSELOR

As a Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counseling Intern, (AOD Intern), you may begin working on your hours according to your school's internship start date and must complete all required hours in accordance with the agreement between your school and Akua Behavioral Health. The intern will support management-level staff and assist in clinical treatment services by providing in a way that maximizes client independence and as applicable family empowerment. This may also include, with supervision, providing individual and/or group therapeutic/counseling services to clients.

The position must meet the following criteria per California Law:

  • The intern knows that the position is unpaid.
  • Training is similar to training received at an educational institution.
  • The internship is tied and integrated to the student's educational program or degree.
  • The intern only works during periods that do not conflict with academic commitments or the academic calendar.
  • The internship only lasts for a period of time in which it imparts beneficial learning upon the intern.
  • The intern's work does not replace existing employees' work while providing significant educational benefits.
  • The intern understands that this internship does not provide entitlement to a job.
Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Practicum Requirements (hours supervised/unsupervised by supervisor)
  • RADT Certification and Registration (CCAPP)
  • Recent Health Screen/Physical (within 6 months)
  • TB Clearance (within 6 months)
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Proof of COVID19 Vaccination
  • Valid Driver License
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions under the supervision of a licensed counselor.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with the clinical team.
  • Assess clients' needs and develop appropriate interventions to address their substance abuse issues.
  • Participate in case management meetings to review and update clients' progress.
  • Assist in facilitating educational and therapeutic groups to enhance clients' understanding of addiction and recovery.
  • Support clients in developing relapse prevention and coping strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records in compliance with legal and ethical requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including medical professionals and case managers,
  • Must pass a background check (Mental Health facility only) and possess a valid driver's license or reliable transportation.


Physical Demands:

The Alcohol and Drug Counselor Intern may be required to sit or stand for extended periods, lift objects up to 20 pounds, and engage in physically demanding activities such as crisis intervention. The intern should be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Other duties assigned - Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces daily. This includes bathrooms, bedrooms, doorknobs, phones, remote controls, counters, table-tops, bathroom fixtures, keyboards, tablets, bedside tables and kitchen appliances and wipe down all workstations before and after use.
