We design, engineer, and manufacture a line of specialty commercial cooking equipment and are seeking a principal engineer to join our engineering team. This position is responsible for advancing engineering principles, theories, and concepts within the group. This role acts as a leader on the team - to mentor engineers to develop them professionally. This is accomplished through the application of review and testing of both new products as well as existing product lines. The successful individual will perform as the technical lead for sustaining and new product development projects and author requirements for electrical design. This role works closely with a cross-functional team to gather information through testing, observation, and design documentation review. The principal engineer needs to balance quality with speed and consider when it is appropriate to make sacrifices to reach a goal. Key responsibilities Oversees all phases of technical projects, including research and development and design. Ensures quality in product design for usability, reliability, functionality, marketability, and manufacturability. Analyzes engineering designs for mechanical and control systems to recommend design or test methods for attaining specified operational reliability, using knowledge of reliability engineering and other technologies. Leads product design verification and validation to satisfy product and customer requirements. Supports the development of products through knowledge of best engineering practices, including all aspects of product design criteria, product function, and customer needs. Contributes as a team member on development projects, carrying out assigned responsibilities in a timely, diligent, safe, and professional manner. May act as a project leader. Reviews engineering specifications and drawings, proposing design modifications to improve cost and other performance requirements. Drafts failure mode and effect analysis sheets or formulates mathematical models, using computer-aided engineering equipment, to identify units posing excessive failure risks and support proposed changes in design. Leads and advises by providing expert advice to other engineers to help support team members in making informed decisions. Applies Design to Cost and Design for Manufacturability methods and works closely with the manufacturing team to transfer products to production. Supports the organization’s intellectual property strategy by documenting data and independent, unique, and patentable ideas that result from experimentation and concept generation activities. Collaborates with others to make proposals and expose organizational needs. Communicates plans, drives improvements, and negotiates by communicating with key stakeholders to discuss budgets and negotiate prices, driving value for our customers. Provides technical support to other departments. Key qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering required. 8-10 years engineering experience; food industry experience is a plus. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Demonstrated ability to develop repeatable processes or improve existing products or processes. Demonstrated “out of the box” thinking and ability to manage multiple competing projects at once. Strong organization and project management skills to manage cross-functional projects with demonstrated ability to meet project deliverables. Strong analytical skills including knowledge of mathematical/statistical principles. Ability to work collaboratively with others throughout the organization. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Working Conditions This role is fulltime onsite and operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works indoors and may be on the factory floor. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in the office and can be loud on the factory floor. Regular contact with moving mechanical parts and occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; lifting to 40 lbs. Periodic travel expected; driving and/or air travel.
