Title: Artistic Associate

Classification: Full-time, Year-Round, Exempt

Salary: $41,000

Location: Cleveland, OH

Reports to: Literary Director and Artistic Director

Desired Start Date: Late September / Early October 2024

Schedule: This position will work 40 hours per week between the hours of 9:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m, Monday through Friday, TBD by the Artistic Associate and Literary Director, with occasional evening and weekend hours.

Cleveland Play House (CPH) is seeking an Artistic Associate to join the Artistic Team. This individual will be responsible for a combination of literary, archival, dramaturgical, and audience engagement activities and tasks, for which they will report to the Literary Director, as well as some scheduling and administrative tasks, for which they will report to the Artistic Director.

Literary Responsibilities (80%) include:
  • Reading incoming scripts and providing feedback
  • Updating and maintaining CPH Literary Department's Script Log
  • Assisting with maintenance of in-person and online Script Libraries
  • Maintaining correspondence with CPH Archives
  • Participating in season planning process: Season Advisory Committee, helping select commissioned playwrights, writing playbill synopses and sizzle sheets
  • Serving as production dramaturg for 1-2 MainStage shows
  • Assisting with the annual New Ground Theatre Festival
  • Developing, writing and/or finding writers for the following: ICPH playbill articles, lobby panels, and website content
  • Overseeing the CSU internship program, including hiring, scheduling, coordinating tasks for, and mentoring 2 interns each semester
  • Other artistic duties, as assigned
Artistic Director Support Responsibilities (20%) include:
  • Primary keeper of the Artistic Director's calendar, including scheduling of meetings, auditions, travel, lodging, and more
  • Assisting Artistic Director with meeting prep
Required Skills and Competencies include:
  • Strong attention to detail and administrative skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Relational acumen and emotional intelligence
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of staff, guest artists, and outside constituents regularly
  • Ability to multi-task and pivot among several different projects on a daily basis
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Exercising professional discretion with confidential or personal information, especially around season selection and commissions
  • Awareness of best practices and common processes in the not-for-profit theatre industry
Desired Experience and Skills Include:
  • Prior experience in theatrical work (literary, audience engagement, marketing)
  • A strong commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Access principles
  • Comfortable in both collaborative and independent working environments
  • Comfortable in both leading projects and simply carrying out directives
  • Ability to receive and deliver feedback in a clear, concise, and compassionate manner
