Correctional Technician

Under close supervision, assists in maintaining order and security in correctional institutions and other places of detention. Enforces rules, regulations, institutional policies, procedures, and state laws necessary for observing offenders and maintaining public safety. Observes conduct and behavior of offenders to prevent disturbances and escapes, reports changes to supervisor. Maintains contact with certified law enforcement staff via telephone, radio, or other telecommunications devices. Guards' facility entrances to screen all personnel before entry or departure. Grants access to employees, contractors, volunteers, and visitors who possess permission to enter the facility. Searches for and interdicts contraband items that are not permitted within the facility. Positively identifies all personnel before departure to prevent escapes. Inspects inventories and maintains physical control of logs, keys, tools, and related equipment. Continuously patrols assigned areas and reports any problems/security violations to the supervisor. Prepares and updates reports and logs to provide an accurate, factual description of events during the assigned shift.

Employees assigned to this job work under the close supervision of a POST-certified officer. They assist in maintaining order and security in correctional institutions and other places of detention.

Incumbents in this job are NOT considered to be POST-certified peace officers. They are restricted in what duties they can perform at a prison. If you wish to be considered for an unrestricted duty POST-certified officer position, apply for Correctional Officer 1 or CSM Correctional Officer 1.

High school diploma or GED.
