Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Teaching, Research, and Engagement, the Head of Access Services provides oversight and leadership for circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and document delivery services across the DePaul University Library. The Head of Access Services collaborates across all library departments, partners on campus, and with consortial partners on issues of collection management, the design and delivery of circulation services, and access to resources and technology. The Head of Access Services fosters a collaborative, productive, and engaging work environment for Access Services staff and provides leadership for assessment activities in their areas of responsibility. The Head of Access Services will work in a highly-supportive and collegial culture that encourages active participation in meaningful and valuable skills training and professional development. This includes workshops, committee memberships, and engagement in programs that support the Library’s mission and its inclusion, diversity, equity, and access goals, while building connections and partnerships across DePaul’s wider academic and user community. Responsibilities & Duties Access Services Leadership & Management Provides oversight and leadership of the Access Services department, including circulation and use of library resources, course reserves, interlibrary loan, document delivery, loanable technology and stacks maintenance. Supervises the operation of the integrated library system in the context of Access Services, including patron and bibliographic records as well as billing and fee collection. Maintains and interprets statistics on the use of the collection, interlibrary loan, course reserves, fines and fees, and other information as needed. Collaborates with Associate University Librarians on matters of budgeting, planning, and decision-making related Access Services. Fosters communication and collaboration within the Access Services department and across the Library. Interdepartmental Collaboration Creates, maintains, and continuously improves policies, procedures and best practices governing access services for patrons in collaboration with library, university and consortial partners. Represents the Access Services perspective on issues relating to access to library facilities, specialized spaces, resources, public services, and access to specialized equipment such as collaboration tables, loanable technology, microform readers, printers, and scanners. Serves as a member of Library Council. Professional Development Maintains an awareness of best practices in academic librarianship through engaging with scholarly and professional literature, participation in relevant conferences, workshops, and professional development programs, and applies lessons learned to current needs in the University Library. Participates and represents the University Library in university, state, regional, or national professional service activities. Education & Experience Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent experience). 6 years of academic library experience, of which at least 3 years must include access services functions. Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct the work of others, with evidence of increasing levels of responsibility. Knowledge of integrated library systems, e-resource management systems, and library discovery systems. Demonstrated ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultural identities and foster an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment. Preferred Requirements Experience with Ex Libris products (Alma and Primo VE). Experience overseeing resource sharing in a consortial environment. Managerial Responsibilities Provides leadership, motivation and management of the Access Services department, fostering efficient and effective workflows and collaboration across functions and departments. Provides direct supervision for seven full-time, non-exempt staff and three part-time staff; provides indirect supervision of student employees. Financial Responsibilities Prepares annual departmental budget and special budgets in collaboration with the Director of Business and Administration and Associate University Librarians. Recommends full-time and part-time salary/wage, acquisition of furniture, technology, supplies, and other acquisitions to support the work of staff in assigned units. Other Skills & Abilities Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent planning, project management, and problem-solving skills. Ability to collect, organize, and interpret relevant statistical information and data. Ability to work in a collegial environment in order to provide excellent library services.
